1. In a homogeneous catalytic reaction, 1.0 M of a substrate bound with 1.0 M of a
catalyst yield 1.0 mM of a product in 10 sec. What is the turnover frequency of the
catalyst?
2. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria have an enzyme, penicillinase, that catalyzes the
decomposition of the antibiotic. The molecular mass of penicillinase is 30000 [Link]-1.
The turnover number of the enzyme at 28 oC is 2000 s-1. If 6.4 g of penicillinase
catalyzes the destruction of 3.11 mg of amoxicillin, an antibiotic with a molecular
mass of 364 [Link]-1, in 20 seconds at 28 oC, determine how many active sites the
enzyme has.
3. (a) Calculate the rate constant for the reaction H2 + C2H4 C2H6 at 628 K using
collision theory. Neglect the steric factor for the time being. Collision cross sections
for H2 and C2H4 are following: (H2) = 0.27 nm2 and (C2H4) = 0.64 nm2. The
activation energy for the reaction is 180 kJ mol-1.
(b) It has been found from experiment that the pre-exponential factor (A) for the
above reaction is 1.24x106 dm3 mol-1 s-1. Can you now determine the steric factor (P)
for the reaction?
4. Calculate the collision rate in molecular nitrogen at 25 oC and 1.0 bar, when [N2] = 40
mol m-3, with diameter of N2 374 pm.
