Slab Thickness Design for Concrete Systems

1. The document provides calculations to determine the required thickness of a concrete slab to support a 46 kip total axle load from a lift truck. 2. The required slab thickness is calculated to be 9.5 inches. Selecting a practical thickness of 8 inches provides a safety factor of 1.137. 3. Reinforcement of 2 layers of #4 bars spaced at 6 inches center to center is sufficient both top and bottom to support the design moment of 10.68 ft-kips per foot width of slab.

From material , site and designer :

Concrete compressive strength fc'= 4000 psi

Modulous of rupture

Subgrade modulus k= 200 pci
Safety factor SF= 2

From lift truck specifications :

Total Axle load= 46 kips

Wheel Spacing = 80 in
Tire pressure = 250 psi
Wheel contact area = 92 in.
Effective diameter = 10.822 in.

The aacceptable flexural tensile stress = 355 psi

The stress per 1000 pounds of axle load= 7.7174

and the required thickness t= 7.8686 in

The desired practical thickness given a safety factor with respect to load induced cracks

Selecting t= 8 in.
Mapp= 5.3398 ft-kips per foot of width of slab

S.m =

Actual stress fb= 500.61 psi.

Safety factor (S.F)= 1.137 > 1 O.k

Seelcting a load factor = 2

The design moment = S.F(Mapp)= 10.68 ft-k (which is per foot width of slab in both directions)
