I. Introduction
Reading is an important skill to help people learn from human knowledge and
experiences. Thus, it plays vital role in motivating students to learn more effectively. Without the
ability to read, life functioning becomes difficult. It is the reason that teachers worry the
importance of reading; however, this is not always directly stated and understood by students. As
the teachers, we are always looking for ways to learn how to motivate students to love reading.
Most teachers would love to help students make a daily habit of reading across a wide variety of
texts, and recent survey research shows that there is a need for students to do so. Reading at this
level means that students can comprehend subject-matter material and apply appropriate
analytical skills or relate to real-world situations.
II. Research Problems
Throughout my personal experience as well as my teaching experience, I observed that most
of Cambodian students do not like reading. As the result most of them are poor at speaking and
writing skills. Reading brings so much to the reader, from grammar and vocabulary to a basic
understanding of how the language works. It is because reading teaches the language learner so
many aspects that will then become useful in writing. The most important factor that they cant
even answer one question. In addition, without reading the students dont have analytical skill.
Its very crucial in workplace because they help you to gather information, communicate,
visualize and solve complex problems.
III. Research Objectives
After reading over many articles about students problems in learning, most of the students
faced some difficulties my students faced as well such as problem with reading and. Some of
them cannot read fluently because they are not brave enough or they have limited vocabulary.
Sometimes they cant write very well since they dont have adequate opinions to support their
topic and so on. These difficulties result from the habit of not reading books. Therefore, we
decided to do research in order to find out the reasons behind the fact that why most students do
not like reading. Also we want to discover some possible solutions in order to motivate my
students to read. To solve a fore mentioned problem, achieving the following goals are very
important:

Overall, ours aim here is mainly to strengthen the learners reading ability and to help those
who are better in reading English. It goes without saying that a group of students who thinks that
this review is helpful for them in term of improving reading skill will possibly important. To
attain these, answers to the following questions are compulsory:
1 Why are most elementary students uninterested in reading?
2 How can I make reading more interesting for students?
V. Literature Review
According to AlbeiroRodas (2010), stated that both younger and older Cambodian students
dont like reading and it is very serious. It is one of the main problems of modern Cambodia and
we need to prevent it. Pupils also stated that they read for enjoyment and because it was relaxing.
Others viewed reading as educational and informative. Similar questions were also asked in a
recent Reading Connects survey (Clark and Foster, 2005), which showed that the majority of
pupils emphasized skills-related reasons. More specifically, half the pupils read because it is a
skill for life and because it will help them find what they need/want to know. Reading as a fun
activity was the third most frequently chosen reason. Fewer pupils read because it helps them
understand the world, teaches them about other people and helps them understand about
themselves. More boys than girls reported that they read because it will help them get a job or
because they have to, while girls indicated reading because it is fun, it teaches them how other
people live and because it gives them a break.
According to Matthew K. Burns (2008) stated that the most efficient way to better engage
students in reading is to allow them to self-select material that represents an instructional level.
Have the student read from the material for three 1-minute samples and compute the percentage
of words that he or she can read correctly within 2 seconds each. If that percentage is less than
93%, then select easier material to use.
VI. Research Methods
Ways to motivate students to read that adopted a mix methods approach. Data for this
study research was based on many methods such as survey, interview and internet. We survey 90
students and interview 10 teachers. We collect data based on two types of sources such as:
primary data and secondary [Link] Data: We will interview 90 students and 10
teacherswhich will be selected from elementary school. After we have done from the survey and
interview questions, we collect many data and result from each student and teacher. All data from
our survey is analysis the statistics by using Microsoft office Excel 2010 program to check mean,
frequencies and the percentages of the research topic in order to know the result.
VII. Limitation
In generally, all of researches are not easily to do these researches because those researches
are facing in many problems. On the other hand, our research also has some problem to do.
However; our group not gives up of this because of importance. The problems for our group
meet:
The first challenge that we met is to develop a doable topic. Its quite difficult because
sometimes the topic we chose is too broad and doesnt suitable with the time we have.
Time constraint: The period of doing research is a little bit short and since both of us are
working so its difficult to meet each other.
Lack of experience: Since this is the first time that we conduct research so its difficult for us
to form research questions, questionnaires as well as data analyzing.
VIII. Conclusion and Recommendation
In conclusion, through our research we found out that most students that we have selected to
survey dont like reading and the reasons are very simple. They dont like to read because they
dont have free time, they are poor at vocabulary, they are lazy to read or they feel sleepy
whenever they read books and so on. As the result of our research we found some possible way
to make students to improve their reading: Firstly, we should let them see what we are reading.
We should set up a book club in order to make students happy and persuade each other to read.
one more thing is that we should let students choose their own book which they are interested in
to read. The last thing is that, we should use technology to create e-book to read because it is
very important and nice to read with attractively of modern world.
