Prestressed Concrete Girder Design Assignment

This document provides instructions for a homework assignment to design a prestressed concrete girder. Students are asked to determine the optimal cross-sectional dimensions and location of the center of gravity of prestressing cables at intervals along the 40m simply supported span. The design aims to minimize the cross-sectional area and concrete volume. Students are provided preliminary design considerations and assumptions and are instructed to use a computer program like Excel to evaluate configurations and check results against hand calculations. The final submission should include program listing, calculation steps, sample hand checks, and tabulated results.

CE 448 Prestressed Concrete Structures

Homework 4

February 10, 2017

A simply-supported prestressed post-tensioned concrete girder of span 40 m and T-shaped cross-

section needs to be designed. This requires determining the dimensions of the cross-section and
the location of c.g.s. of prestressed cables. From experience and basic design considerations, the
following design decisions are already available to you:
1. The depth of the girder should be 2000 mm.
2. A total of 6 ducts running 19T13 cables are to be used. Assume duct diameter to be 60
mm. All cables are stretched in a single stage.
3. The minimum width of the web of T-section should be 350 mm.
4. The minimum depth of top flange of the T-section should be 250 mm.
5. The width of the top flange has no restriction.
6. The dimensions of the section must be rounded to the nearest 25 mm.
7. Assume that the effect of SIDL, IL etc (except dead load) is 2.0 times the effect of DL of
corresponding rectangular section (if the area of the T-section is taken as an equivalent
rectangle. This implies that SIDL and IL are not constant.) All loads are applied to the
girder as UDL.
8. The c.g.s. must be at least 250 mm from both top and bottom at all points along the span.
9. The top eccentricity may be above the centroidal axis if required.

The aim of your design is to determine the section dimensions with the smallest cross-section
area, which will result in the lowest volume of concrete to be used. Write a computer program,
preferably in excel, to evaluate various cross-section configurations at different locations spaced
at 1 m from one another along the span. Consider both the initial prestressing condition when
only the dead load acts and the service loading condition when all loads are present.

Give the results for the most optimal design along with the size of the section, and the coordinates
of the c.g.s. at different locations along the span.

Note that you need to consider the losses in prestressing in your design. Also take net geometric
properties for initial prestressing, and transformed ones under service conditions.

Take concrete grade as M50 and use standard steel cable properties specified in class. Make
suitable assumptions about other information as required.

Your submission should clearly describe the calculation steps that are used in the program. The
sample checking of program results with hand calculations should also be provided. The final
results of the design should be presented in a tabular manner. The program listing should also be
included in the submission. The assignment should be hand-written except for the program
listing, and uploaded on moodle after converting to a single PDF document.
