Analyzing Mañanita's Cultural Significance

This thesis analyzes a traditional birthday song from Marinduque, Philippines called "Mañanita" using a stylistic analysis approach. STYLISTIC ANALYSIS. AB-ENGLISH, Marinduque State College. Boac, Marinduque.

This thesis is a literary analysis that reviews comprehension using the delimited checklist
of Geoffrey Leech and Mick Short on the adaptation of the cultural practice and the selected song
incorporated in Maanita to fully understand and appreciate artistic works in literature.

The distinct cultural song of Maanita in Boac, Marinduque was subjected to a Stylistic
analysis in order to recognize the influence of its elements and the conveyed meaning based on the
content and context of the song. Given that the Scholars regarded that No language is a readily
identifiable object in reality that can be isolated and examined; then, language can become a
barrier to successful communication especially if a person in the society chooses to disregard
certain of its rules.

Therefore, this paper illustrates how discourse is used on inferring the context of the song
How beautiful is the morning to essentially address the language in context since it can display
social matters specifically the culture in rural and city life. Thus, consideration of the lexis, the
context of the situation and the discourse was applied in the study.

The study revealed that some words have similar meanings but tend to be used in
particular English and resulted confusion to some of the Filipino users. The form of words or the
discourse subsequently belongs to English terminologies, vocabularies and manifestations of
everyday conversational remarks. Similarly, it is shown that the descriptions, traits and story in the
song departs the norms of what the text has led people to expect. On the culture itself, most of the
respondents distinguished Maanita as a cultural birthday song usually played at serenades for
loved ones in the early morning hours. While minority discloses that it is dedicated to a child
during baptism at the sacramental fountain.
