Big or Essential Question: Two letters can spell one sound. I can spell words by segmenting
and blending sounds. Wh is a digraph and I know what sound it spells.

Curriculum Standards: CC.1.1.1.D Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis
skills in decoding words. (Identify common consonant digraphs, final-e, and common vowel
teams)

CC.1.1.1.C Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes).


Orally produce single-syllable words, including consonant blends and digraphs.

Lesson Objectives: The students will be able to define what a digraph is. The students will be
able to correctly spell 8 out of 10 words using segmenting and blending skills.

Assessment: The students will highlight words with the digraph wh in a passage. The teacher
will observe the students making the wh sound and the students segmenting/blending.

Materials and Resources:


letter cards for spelling (1 set per student)
digraph definition flashcard (teacher)
Whisker Bill decodable reader. (1per student)
highlighters (1 per student)
word list to spell: whip, when, why, whale, white, whisker, whisper

Vocabulary:

Procedures:
1. Review the definition of a digraph.
2. Have the students practice whispering the /wh/ sound
3. Explain expectations for decodable reader activity.
4. Pass out materials.
5. Read Whisker Bill decodable reader aloud to students.
6. Have the students follow along and highlight words with wh.
7. For each page, ask how many words they should highlight and to read the words aloud.
8. Collect materials.
9. Give expectations for word spelling. Pass out materials.
10. Spell the words whip, when, why, whale, white, whisker, whisper using letter cards.
11. Collect materials.

Adaptations: read directions aloud to all students; small group instruction for all students;
pre-made spelling cards

Closure: Practice making the /wh/ sound.
