Alice Paul was researching topics for a National History Day project and chose to focus on Alice Paul, a leader in the women's suffrage movement. She conducted research using online sources and books from the library to learn about Alice Paul's background and her role in fighting for women's right to vote. The student decided to create an individual website to present her research, as she wanted to challenge herself with this new format compared to an exhibit she had done previously. When I was looking up topics for National History day I had no idea what I was going to
do, so I went online and typed in people that made a difference in history and with a lot of
looking I found a couple of ideas. My ideas were Jesse Owens, Jesse Depriest,Annie Besant,
Alice Paul and Earl Lloyd. I knew a couple of people in my class were researching Jesse Owens
and reading more into the individuals and Alice Paul had a really interesting background. In
addition, the idea of a woman going to jail to fight for womens rights. Also, I wanted to learn
more about women suffragist. Even though women dont have all the same rights men do, she
still made a huge difference.
I first went online and found reliable websites with information that I could use later on
our project. I also ordered books online from the Winding Rivers Library System. Later, I took a
class field trip to the La Crosse Main Library and I found books, newspaper articles and letters
online and in the library. The next day my teacher gave our class time to work on citing and
reading books, while extracting information from them. I have been making docs and citations
that I can use when I create my website. In addition, I talked to many librarians and asked what
good sources I could use that would help me with my website. [Link] is one of the most
usefull website that I used. This site had many primary and secondary sources in it. The site
consisted of documents, interviews and just about everything about her.
I was not exactly sure how I wanted present my research that I found, but I knew I
wanted to show it by making either a website or exhibit. The decision was very difficult to make.
I figured I would have a better chance going to NHD regionals again through a website then an
exhibit. Furthermore, I wanted to try and make my own website all by myself with little
guidance. Also, I wanted to make a website because I made an exhibit with my friend. Since I
already tried an exhibit, I wanted to challenge myself with a website. I figured since I havent
made a website before it would be fun to try. I talked about her change in the world and her early
life and later life. I had difficulty finding important videos and other primary photos.
Alice Paul connects to 2016 National History Day theme. Alice Paul was raised to
believe that women and men are created equal. Alice Paul took a stand in history by protesting
for womens suffrage through protest, including picketing the White House, imprisonment, and a
hunger strike. Paul, along with Lucy Burns, were the main leader and strategist of the 1910s
campaign for the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution along with the Equal Rights
Amendment.
