Game show Overview.

My main role in this production was a director, producer and Team leader. I feel as though I
was successful in my role as team leader. I encountered a few difficulties in the production of
the show and pre-production stage.
As the team leader, I feel as though my biggest fault was I couldnt motivate my team to
work on a similar level as I also lacked communication between myself and a few members
of my team.
We didnt see eye to eye on some things, those things being mostly when things should be
done and if something were being done too early, for example, I requested a whole group
meeting to plan the lighting plans in November, at the time no one came so that left us
without a solid lighting plan. Im aware it wasnt the whole group's responsibility but at the
time we didnt have our job roles so it became a group project.
I found myself often disagreeing with certain team members especially when work wasnt
done, when it needed to be, like the website being designed and created a week before
filming because of the lack of communication between myself and the original creator.
In the future when working in a large group of people, I will continue to try and improve my
communication skills between myself and the team listening and adapting to their requests,
and not just going with what I thought was best. I would also have more team meetings, I
feel as though there an efficient way to learn about the feelings of the members around you
whilst also getting an idea on the development of the project.
As a director, I feel as though it went very successfully. I wrote the script so I was aware
what to expect and we worked closely to achieve it with our 0 budget available to us. After
having problems with the footage filmed through the vision mixer, I even edited the product
so I evaluated sound and shots, and picked the ones I wanted to use and the ones I found
no need for. We did have a problem with one microphone which none of us noticed until in
post, due to our lack of training, on specific items, keeping this into consideration in the
future I will check all technical elements of the project and also ask for the advice of a
technician or lecturer.
As a director, its important for me to have an idea of all the elements involved in the
development of the show. I essentially become responsible for the look and sound of the
show and may have neglected this element.
In the future, I will triple check all elements and try and fix them before they're involved in
the final cut.
I understand the role of a producer is to look after the production. I feel as though Ive done
this successfully because we have a final product, which works within the briefs limitations. It
was filmed as live, with a live audience.
If I was to do this job role again, I would research it in depth because I still dont
understand the full depth of a producer's role, which is my own fault. I shouldve taken the
initiative to do so, but became distracted with my other roles.
Throughout this project, we were required to research a handful of aspects that coincide
with game shows. I will only talk about the few elements which influenced the final product
itself.
I feel as though the secondary research done for my codes and conventions essay,
influenced the final product [Link] this essay, I learnt about the expectations of the
host, set, lighting, sound and shots used in game shows.
Having high key lighting, using bright fluorescent lighting is a convention of game shows,
used throughout the decades. Throughout rehearsals and the pre-production process I
thought it would be difficult to have a set with high key lighting because of our financial and
technical limitations, on top of this, we also used a projector to project one of our main
elements on the wall.
Until the day before filming the lighting was very dark with three darks spots. A lecturer
suggested we use fairy lights to light up the set, so we used them.
It massively improved the production of the show. Bringing less blank spots and evenly
lighting up the set, allowing for us to follow and conform to a very important convention.
Another example of how my research which influenced my gameshow was looking at the
shots used. In game shows, you see many examples of mid-shots and tight edit cuts being
used to capture the discussion between host and contestant, which is heavily used in my
game show for the same reason. Again showing the understanding of basic codes and
conventions used in game shows.
The research overall was successful, I learnt a lot about the cons of freelance working and
the difficulties which come with live tv and Multi-camera recording. I did this through reading
books and articles on various live TV recordings and Multi-camera recordings.
I used primary research for the freelance working interview, I decided it would be a better
idea to capture the difficulties of the role instead of reading a jazzy Its not that bad article.

The most captivating element of this project was the multimedia aspect of it. I was
originally not meant to be heavily involved in the graphic element but more of a responsibility
to look over the various elements, as fate would have it I was given a week before filming to
create a website. I also hosted and planned the focus group for our graphics team.
I feel as though the website is very weak. It works effectively as a website which shows
information but it doesn't seem like a game show website more of an events management
website.
If I hadnt neglected this element of the work, I feel as though I couldve made a more
effective website possibly using muse, instead of using Wix. Which brought more limitations
than expected.
Wix is a website builder, so limits what you can do through the use of building blocks ;I
found it difficult to build the website with the blocks given to you as there very limiting, for
example I had to use HTML scripting to encode social media icons but learning how to use a
whole new adobe programme wouldve been too time-consuming, and at the time of creating
the website anything wouldve done.
In the future, I will allow more time for the multimedia elements of the project and take them
into consideration more whilst create a product.
My research started with a focus group discussing our graphic elements. The focus group
was very successful, we used the information learnt from it and applied it to our graphic
development. I noted that in the last project I wanted to do a focus group, so instead applied
it to this project.
To learn more about websites, I looked at three gameshow websites and took elements
from each which I thought was effective. For example the contestant's page. You can see a
similar layout used in the family feud website. I regurgitated elements which I thought were
interesting and helpful, so continued to recreate them into our own product.
Again if I hadnt neglected the element I would've come up with more original ideas, and
used our own.
I dont feel as though the website or app had that much of an influence on our final product.
Only because we neglected them, which in retrospect was a terrible idea. We shouldve
taken their importance more seriously and utilised the opportunity to the max. Which we
didnt, so the app nor does the website represent the show for what it really, nor does it
convey the mood of the show.
The app is better at representing what the mood of the show was, to educate, but it still
wasnt what Id like it to be. However, our app designer did an amazing job considering the
amount of time the group gave to the multimedia graphic elements.
I do acknowledge this is my fault, as team leader I shouldve had a better idea of what the
original designer was doing, but I was often told it was fine without requesting samples, so it
was due to my neglect and lack of communication that the group found themselves in this
predicament.
If given another chance, I would give more time to development and planning of the
multimedia aspects probably looking into more options of what is available for young
developers to use. It wouldve been nice for the wheel to be represented anywhere on the
app or website but thats something we overlooked in development.

Our pre-production process was successful everything was done on time for the show and
we werent really missing anything, besides the elements of the graphic work which were
finally done.

We faced a handful of Audio and Visual problems throughout our production, which were
only noticed in the post production process.
First I will talk about the audio problems; One of the four microphones during filming cut out,
at the start of the show. Which none of us noticed until post. We used four lapel microphones
because we didnt have enough manpower to have two people swinging boom, If we were to
film as live straight to something like youtube it wouldve been a massive problem. Instead,
I was able to use the audio footage from the contestant closer to him and cut the audio for it
to be louder.
We also didnt have the technology needed to play surround sound, sound effects. Such as
intense music or the clicking sound of the wheel. For the audience, this made it a lacklustre
experience. Again this is something easily fixed in post, but I feel as though if we had the
technology and the funding for these items we wouldve been able to rectify this problem for
our live audience, as mentioned this is something easily rectified in the post.
Our final audio problem but the first visual problem is the lip syncing delay caused by the
general delay of the vision mixer, meaning the host couldnt be synced. I used the raw
footage and audio taken by the original camera it was recorded on straight from the SD Card
to recertify our problem. This caused more problems but I had no other choice, the audio is
echoey and not very clear, but we work with what we get.
Our footage had a handful of problems as well. All of the camera's frame rates were set to
different rates, one even set to 20 Fps. This is no one's fault, the cameramen werent
properly trained nor did they even know that you have to consider fps when working on a
camera, which I think more reflects on the training weve been given.
Because of the syncing problem mentioned earlier we had to use the raw footage, including
echoing audience audio, this was fixed in post with close audio cuts.
We had another last minute issue, one of our cameras men's shots werent quick enough
and often had motion blur as he was planning between contestants even after being notified
that we transitioned. We quickly changed the camera men, and the show improved
drastically.
In the future, I will request the help of a professional to check the vision mixer and the
audio in which we are using to stop delay happening in the future. Regarding our
cameraman problem, its more hope that were trained and the people take the initiative to
learn about the camera independently if they feel as though there are holes in their
knowledge.
After looking at the show, I feel as though the demographic for the show would be
Housewives and Children which a basic primary school education, I feel as though it would
appeal to both boys and girls which would also appeal to children of all racial and religious
backgrounds. I would expect the show to be broadcasted for the BBC to CBBC.
If we look at the questions asked in the show we can identify that it would attract people
with a primary school education asking questions about Henry the 8th and things learnt at
KS2 curriculum in the UK. It would also attract housewives with social media questions that
they would know if theyre online. The questions asked aren't gendered specific and we even
have a female on our panel, so young girls would be able to relate to her, allowing for there
to be the representation of females on our show. The female panellist also is Mexican, so we
have an example of the representation of another culture and our host is Lithuania. I feel as
though the BBC would be interested in the show because it follows their mantra. To educate,
entertain and inform, so in turn, it would be broadcasted on CBBC, because of the humour in
the show. Often requesting for the viewer to ask their parents about things mentioned on the
show, such as the congestion charge. The show would also be broadcasted at 4:30, a time
when the kids have just got in from school and are settling down for the day.
The audience would be attracted to the humour of the host and the set. The set is simple
and not distracting allowing for comfortable viewing, when learning things about various Key
Stage 2 subjects. Jokes such as You made a nuclear mess out of that are funny and
caused the crew to giggle each time. The transparency of the questions would also be
attractive to those who wanted some light entertaining.

If we look at Richard dyers utopian theory, we can assess that our show doesnt fully into
the entire curriculum. Richard dyers utopian theory suggest that we consume media to fulfil
absence in our own lives, through energy, abundance, intensity, transparency and
community, whilst often living vicariously through things we see on TV.
Our show has energy used through the clapping sound effects and sound effects used for
the wheel creates energy for the audience member, again it lacks abundance and intensity
because it is an educational panel show, there is transparency, the questions are easy to
answer and entertaining and we see examples of community by our mixed gendered panel.
We originally planned to have a more racially diverse cast, but things had to change
because of prior plans.

In Conclusion:
Each project comes with its difficulties and stresses, but I feel as though Ive learnt from
his project. I will take more time to consider multimedia aspects of media, this is something I
obviously neglected. My biggest weakness was the lack of communication between myself
and my team regarding the graphic element. Its easy to say, Its what I am most
disappointed in on this project.
The pre-production went really well and smoothly. When I regard pre-production here, I
mean script, shot list and everything else that doesn't involve graphics even though I know
that they should be regarded and treated the same.
The production itself again went smoothly, and so did the post.
The whole experience was a very pleasant experience and it was great working on a project
like this and would do so again, just maybe not a game show.
