Penstock Head Loss Calculations

This document contains calculations of head losses in two penstocks (PS1 and PS2) for a hydropower project. It calculates the head loss due to friction in the penstock using the Darcy-Weisbach equation and due to bends using the bend loss coefficient. The total maximum head loss calculated is 0.0158 meters, accounting for losses from friction in both penstocks and losses from bends in each penstock. Variables like penstock diameter, velocity, and number of bends are used in the calculations.

1 Penstock loss in PS 2

HL n2 x v2 x L / R4/3
where,
n = 0.011
Design discharge = 70.00 cumecs
Dia of penstock = 3.75 m
c/s Area of penstock = 11.04 m2
v velocity in penstock = 6.34 m/s
Change in length of penstock = -0.12 m
R A/P = 0.94
Therefore,
Head loss in penstock = -0.0006 m

2 Bend losses in penstock 2

No. of bends = 4
Bend angle = 176.5 degrees

HL Kb v2 / 2g

where,
Kb = 0.002
Design discharge = 70.00 cumecs
D dia = 3.75 m
c/s Area of penstock = 11.04 m2
v velocity in penstock = 6.34 m/s
Therefore,
head loss for 1 bend of penstock = 0.0041 m
Head loss for 4 nos. bends = 0.0164 m

1 Penstock loss in PS 1

HL n2 x v2 x L / R4/3
where,
n = 0.011
Design discharge = 70.00 cumecs
Dia of penstock = 3.75 m
c/s Area of penstock = 11.04 m2
v velocity in penstock = 6.34 m/s
Change in length of penstock = 0.66 m
R A/P = 0.94
Therefore,
Head loss in penstock = 0.0035 m

2 Bend losses in penstock PS 1

No. of bends = 2
Bend angle = 176.5 degrees

HL Kb v2 / 2g

where,
Kb = 0.002
Design discharge = 70.00 cumecs
D dia = 3.75 m
c/s Area of penstock = 11.04 m2
v velocity in penstock = 6.34 m/s
Therefore,
head loss for 1 bend of penstock = 0.0041 m
Head loss for 4 nos. bends = 0.0082 m

Hence, Total Maximum Loss = 0.0158 m
