Project Specifications

Fire Alarm and Protective Systems


1. Determine use and occupancy of building.

2. Calculate building area and building height.

3. Determine type of construction.

4. Determine type of fire alarm system.

5. Determine location of fire alarm and control facility, manual pull stations, heat detectors,
smoke detectors, audible signal appliances and visual signal appliances.

6. Prepare a legend of all devices.

7. Establish all fire zones.

8. Calculate occupant load for each room and space, and the total occupant load:
a. Classrooms: 19.9 ft2 per person
b. Office: 100 ft2 per person
c. Reading room 19.9 ft2 per person
d. Writing room 19.9 ft2 per person
e. Lounges 19.9 ft2 per person
f. Cafeteria space: 11.8 ft2 per person
g. Storage space: 495 ft2 per person
h. Kitchen: 100 ft2 per person
i. Cleaning and repair of goods: 49.5 ft2 per person

9. Heat detector: 57C RoR & FT (listed spacing 30 feet).

10. Heat detector: 88C Fixed Temperature only (listed spacing 30 feet).

11. Smoke detector: ionization (listed spacing 30 feet).

12. Fire alarm audible/visual signal appliance (94 dBA) (0.15 amperes per device).

13. Mini horn/strobe (86 dBA) (0.025 amperes per device).

14. Calculate spacing of alarm signaling appliances.

15. Calculate circuit power loss for each notification appliance circuit using 14 AWG.

16. Calculate battery capacity.

17. Determine requirements for automatic sprinkler system.

18. Determine standpipe system requirements.

19. Determine requirements for emergency lighting.
