BUSSTEPP: Supersymmetry Exercises

This document contains 3 exercises on supersymmetry. Exercise 1 shows the transformation of SUSY generators and discusses how the F component of a chiral superfield transforms. Exercise 2 calculates the scalar potential for two superpotentials and determines if supersymmetry is broken. If broken, it finds the fermion mass spectrum and goldstino state. Exercise 3 shows the 1-loop RG equations coefficients for gauge couplings are (33/5, 1, -3) in the MSSM.

BUSSTEPP problems on Supersymmetry 2

August 2016

Exercise 1
Show that, in the transformed coordinates y = x + i , the SUSY
generators have the form

Q = i , Q = i + 2 . (1)
y
Hence, or otherwise, calculate how the components of a chiral superfield
transform and discuss the importance of the way in which the F component
transforms.

Exercise 2
For the superpotentials below, calculate the scalar potential and determine
whether supersymmetry is broken.

a) W (1 , 2 ) = m1 21 + m2 22 + 1 2 + 21 2 .

b) W (1 , 2 , 3 ) = 2 1 + m2 3 + 1 22 .

If SUSY is broken find the fermionic mass spectrum and determine the gold-
stino state.

Exercise 3*
The 1-loop RG equations for the Standard Model gauge couplings g1 , g2 , g3
are
dga 1
= ba ga3 .
dt 16 2
Show that the coefficients (b1 , b2 , b3 ) = (33/5, 1, 3) in the MSSM.
