Our topic for this year is the Korean Independence Movement (KIM). A key reason this
topic was chosen for is that we are both Korean-Americans, therefore this cause had a big impact
on our lives. To come up with a final topic, we considered commonly-known examples of taking
a stand such as the Civil Rights Movement and Womens Rights, and also less-known examples
of taking a stand such as the tank man incident in Tiananmen Square. We chose our final topic
after we watched a documentary about the Korean Independence Movement and were reminded
of its significance/relevance to our personal lives. We then realized the connection to the theme,
and submitted the topic.
The research started with archived newspapers. We were surprised and interested to see
old American newspapers that covered the KIM, and they branched off into more current news
articles and other online resources. The websites visited were reliable sources that included
useful information about the KIM. A mixture of interesting primary and secondary sources was
used to give a balanced feel to our research. Quotes also helped provoke thought in us and future
viewers of our website. When searching through databases we found some interesting
documents, such as a previously classified CIA document and some disturbing pictures of
wounds inflicted by the Japanese soldiers. A brief scan of the local library did not turn up any
information we did not already have.
One group member had a bad experience working with documentaries so that option was
ruled out immediately. Because we wanted to work in a group we couldnt do a paper. Out of the
remaining options, the website seemed the most appealing because of our existing technological
abilities. Most of the creation just involved typing, dragging, and saving, so we were able to

complete it pretty easily. Although there were definitely some rough spots and compromises with
technology, we managed to mostly solve all of our problems.
Our project represents the theme of taking a stand because in the KIM, Koreans had to
stand up against Japanese imperialists. Protests are a common example of taking a stand and the
KIM was full of them. The movement involved violent and nonviolent methods to inform the
public, Japan, and the entire world of the crisis Koreans faced. Although the success of the KIM
and its leaders is debatable, no one can deny that Koreans at least tried to resist their Japanese
oppressors.
