Hiware Bazar: A Model Village Transformation

The village of Hiware Bazar in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra was facing many problems such as drought, lack of drinking water, unemployment, and migration. During 1972-1989, there was major migration from the village due to frequent droughts and no source of income. In 1989, the villagers elected a new Sarpanch who had recently completed his post-graduate education. He worked to implement the state government's "Adarsh Gram Yojana" watershed development program. Various soil and water conservation activities were undertaken from 1990-1995 such as tree planting, contour bunds, and check dams. These led to increased water availability, irrigation, and crop yields. The village also emphasized education, population control
