Coupling Life Testing Results and Analysis

The coupling was tested under three conditions: constant speed of 4000 rpm, long ramps up and down between 4000 rpm and 0 rpm over several hours, and short ramps up and down between 4000 rpm and 0 rpm every 40 seconds. The coupling bellows experienced the most loading during ramp up and down when the entire coupling shook. Over 537 hours, or 22.4 days, the coupling underwent short ramps testing with the shafts misaligned up to 12.8 mm. After 33.4 total days of testing, the first oil leakage appeared, equivalent to over 104 million cycles of bellows bending. However, no abnormal temperature trends were found on the bearings or couplings at the time of oil leakage. Further analysis

1 Coupling life testing

The coupling run in three test conditions:
1. Constant speed running at 4000 rpm,
2. Long ramps - 3 hours and 41 minutes ramp up to 4000 rpm and again 3 hours and 41 minutes
ramp down to 0 rpm, repeating,
3. Short ramps - 40 s ramp up to 4000 rpm and again 40 s ramp down to 0 rpm , repeating.
It was found that the coupling bellows is mostly loaded during run-ups and run-downs when the whole
coupling shakes. So the biggest part of testing so far was run with short ramps. Table 1 summarizes time
of testing in each test condition.

In Error: Reference source not found, Error: Reference source not found and Error: Reference source not
found you can see examples of the test procedure (all three test conditions) and temperature trends on
IGW and KWD coupling halves surface measured with infrared thermometer.
The shafts which are connected with the coupling were misaligned for 12,8 mm, as seen on Error:
Reference source not found, simulating maximal permissible shafts misalignment.

Conclusion: The coupling run for 33,4 days, when the first oil leakage appeared (see Error: Reference
source not found), it equals to aprox. 104 062 000 cycles of bending the coupling bellows (it was
calculated with average speed 2000 rpm for the ramps test condition and 4000 rpm for constant speed
and 1 revolution of the coupling equals to 1 cycle).
No abnormal temperature trend on bearings and couplings was found on the last temperature record,
while the oil leakage appeared. Temperature record of the last 24 hours is shown in Error: Reference
source not found (it was running in short ramps test condition).
Detail analysis of the bellows is needed for more specific conclusion of possible bellows damage.
