Is there any support in the case of an emergency,
like an injury or illness?
A: JET participants are covered by Employees Health
Insurance and JET Accident Insurance to reduce the
costs of medical expenses and personal liability
incurred due to injuries or illnesses.
Can I consult with a specialist if I am having
problems related to daily life and work in Japan?
A: A free online consultation service is available for JET
participants to speak with counsellors and mental
health specialists in regards to work issues or daily life
problems.
Will there be opportunities to learn about teaching
methods if I have no experience in teaching English?
A: To improve teaching skills, JET participants are
provided with subsidies to obtain TEFL certication.
Recruitment and Selection
The recruitment and selection of JET participants is
conducted at Japanese embassies and consulates
around the world. Applications received by the deadline
are screened and interviews for selected candidates will
be held.

The JET Programme
The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme
started in 1987, with the aim of promoting
internationalisation and mutual understanding between
Japan and other countries by enriching foreign language
education and international exchange at the local level.
In 2015, the JET Programme welcomed 4,786 participants
from 43 countries. Since the beginning of the JET
Programme, there have been more than 62,000
participants from 65 countries around the world.
The JET Programme is administered by government
organisations in cooperation with:
The Ministry of Internal Aairs and Communications (MIC)
The Ministry of Foreign Aairs (MOFA)
The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and
Technology (MEXT)
The Council of Local Authorities for International
Relations (CLAIR)
JET Programme participants are appointed by
prefectures and municipalities throughout Japan and
work in local government organisations and schools.
Job Types
Assistant Language Teacher (ALT)
Participants employed as ALTs are placed in schools or
local boards of education. ALTs assist Japanese teachers
with foreign language lessons, and are thus involved in the
preparation of teaching
m a t e r i a l s a n d
extracurricular activities
such as English clubs. More
than 90% of JET
participants are ALTs.
Coordinator for International Relations (CIR)
Participants employed as CIRs assist local government
organisations in various international exchange activities.
Due to the work content, CIRs are required to have a
functional command of
the Japanese language
(equivalent to level N2 or
higher of the Japanese
Language Prociency

General Conditions
(1) Appointment
In principle, JET Programme appointments are for a one
year period.
If both the contracting organisation and JET participant
agree, two reappointments are permissible (three years
in total). Furthermore, if a JET participant s work is
deemed to be of an exceptionally high standard, an
additional two appointments are possible (ve years
altogether).
(2) Work Hours
35 hours per week
(JET participants usually work Monday to Friday, but this
may vary according to each contracting organisation).
(3) Holidays
Saturday, Sunday, Japanese national holidays, paid
leave (10 days minimum).
*Due to work circumstances, JET participants may be
asked to work during weekends and national holidays.
(4) Remuneration
JET participants are guaranteed a remuneration of
approximately 3.36 million yen for their rst appointment.
Remuneration increases from the second appointment.
(5) Assignment
JET participants are assigned to local government
organisations and schools throughout Japan. Although
requests are accepted, assignments may dier from that
requested.
Sports Exchange Advisor (SEA)
Participants employed as SEAs work for local government
organisations coaching
sports. SEAs are
professionals who assist
with training and the
planning of sports-related
projects, as well as
international exchange
activities.
Eligibility
Applicants must:
Be interested in Japan, and be willing to deepen their
knowledge and appreciation of Japan.
Hold at least a Bachelor s degree or obtain such
qualications by the designated arrival date in April,
July, or August. (ALT and CIR applicants only)
Be a national of the country where the recruitment and
selection procedures take place.
Not have lived in Japan for six or more years in total in
the past ten years.
