The Impact of Parkinson's Disease Awareness

This poem describes the progression of Parkinson's disease inside the speaker's body as a ticking time bomb that was secretly planted while they slept. The speaker reflects that they should have been more vigilant in following news and warnings about Parkinson's but now it is too late as the ticking grows louder. Specialists have been mobilized but conclude trying to stop the progression is "mission impossible." The poem ends with the disease exploding inside the speaker's body, leaving a mess as there is nothing more that can be done.

Now, on behalf of the PLF….

( The Parkinson ‘s Liberation Front)

Tick, tick, tick, tick.

Deep inside me is a time bomb,
At this moment still quite small,
Planted secretly by someone unknown
While I continued to
Sleep on through life.
Just randomly sneaked in
Issuing a wake up call.
Bastard.
I was quite happy.

Tock, tock, tock, tock.

Its all my fault of course.
The usual really.
I should have been more vigilant.
Got involved; followed the news,
Checked out the warnings;
Understood the signs;
Had a sympathy for the cause.
Watched, checked, questioned those close to me;
Reported back. And did I?!
Well.

Tick, tock, tick, tock, tick, tock, tick, tock.

Oh, listen, there is increased momentum
Or is it “progression”?
The vibration of indecision making overwhelming.
An army of specialists have been mobilised.
Conclusion: mission impossible.
And, now, advised to withdraw
Have cordoned off the problem beyond yellow tape,
“Do not cross this line” it says.

Tickety, tickety, tickety, tock, tock, tick, toc, ti, ti……

Time up! Leave the area, please! Stand clear!
Boom!

Oh, dear, another job half done.

What a mess.
Move along now, please.
There is nothing more to see.
