Macroinvertebrate Sampling Protocols

This document provides guidance on sampling macroinvertebrates using quantitative Surber samplers and kick nets. Key steps include choosing riffle or run sampling locations with appropriate depth and velocity, firmly setting the sampling equipment, disturbing the streambed within the sampler/net to dislodge organisms, and ensuring all dislodged organisms are carried into the collection net. Sampling depth and duration should remain consistent across sites. Safety precautions are recommended when sampling urban streams.
