In this article, a multimedia journalist Kate Freeman , studies and finds out if overuse of a
cell phone, tablet, or any other electronically powered device could be the cause of brain
damage. After looking up the science behind it, she reported that researchers took MRI scans of
seventeen adolescents and found brain damage or functional damage of the brain. Freeman
explains how the findings of researchers have been able to diagnose kids with Internet Addiction
Disorder and how it has messed with the function and structure of their brain. She asserts that
this should be taken seriously and that there is such a thing as an addiction to your device and
that it is an unhealthy connection. This article really helps out the fact of that overusing a
electronic device could leave a physical damage on you. This article will be useful to my
capstone because I want to show the negative effects of electronic addictions and how it affects
the younger mindsets.

In this article, Archer points out how our electronic devices have become more of a friend
than a tool that can help us. He has reviewed many surveys and seen many research experiments,
he has realized how much the average person relies on their cell phone. Archers article reveals
how the average person has became so attached to their device that it is more like a best friend
for them. He states that constantly being attached to your phone can result in huge amount of
social anxiety, major fatigue, and many other symptoms. This article really helps my project
because it lists symptoms and signs of overuse of their device. It also states what it can cause and
some people use it as a replacement for a best friend or other acquaintances. This will enhance
my capstone project because it shows the signs and effects of the addiction.

In this article, Toadvine explains how face-to-face communication has extremely decreased
due to social media and technological interactions. After reviewing a study done by Tamyra
Pierce, she took more of a look into how much teens use their phone rather than communication
to each other in person. Toadvine reviewed in this article after Tamyra's experiment with twohundred and eighty high school kids, that the more social media a kid has the more they have
trouble with social skills and having face-to-face communication. Also, the author shows how

kids are becoming very comfortable in having a connection behind phone screens, that it is
negatively affecting the generations communication skills with each other. This will help my
capstone because it shows how the cell phone can over power peoples behavior and shows that
their communication skills will eventually be nonexistent. It also helps me learn about how to
much social media has will affect the outcome of their social skills [Link] signs and
effects of the addiction.
Sorensen, Barbara. "How Does Technology Affect Family Communication?"
[Link]. Leaf Group, 28 Jan. 2015. Web. 01 Dec. 2016.

In this article, Sorensen claims that if parents don't start limiting the time their children
have with technology it will eventually cause lack of family communication. Sorensen looked
into studies done by University of Maines Cooperative Extension Publications and Indiana
University, they both explained how some parents feel as if too much use of technology could
lead to their kids being socially isolated. Sorensen wrote this article taking a look at both views
but revealing that communication between families will fall through the cracks if their kids are
not limited to technology. And the fact that these companies making these virtual products are
trying to believe that virtual interaction is the same as face-to-face communication. This resource
really helps my projects because it shows not only will kids not be able to socially act with other
people such as friends but also family members.

In this article, Holmes states all the facts that shows how too much overuse of a cell phone
can deteriorate your mind and body. Holmes uses several source while stating all these facts,
such as a spine surgeon and the researchers at University of Exeter, and more to discover all the
different harmful effects to our body and mind. Holmes states that cell phones are an amazing
tool but too much time with can take a big toll on your body and mind. Some physical effects are
blemishes or spine wreckage, while the mental effects are anxiety, fatigue, brain alterations, and
possible withdrawal if they had to go without. I believe this resource will really help with my
capstones because it shows you damaging affects on the mind and the body, not just about social
altercations. This will enhance the project because not only does it tell us the physical and mental
damage they even compare to those who have addictions with other substances, which will show
just how bad addiction to the cell phone could be.
