Second Grade Two-Digit Addition Unit

This unit plan is for a second grade mathematics unit on two-digit addition. The unit will focus on Common Core standards involving explaining why addition strategies work using place value and properties of operations, and fluently adding within 100 using place value strategies. Students will build on their understanding of place value and learn four new strategies for two-digit addition: making a ten, break apart, regrouping, and the standard algorithm. They will start with addition not requiring regrouping and progress to addition that does require regrouping. The unit is based on the textbook Go Math and is significant because proficiency with two-digit addition is essential for future mathematics skills.

U

nit Plan: Topic / Theme Statement

My unit is a mathematics unit on two-digit addition for second grade. This unit
involves the common core standards, E
xplain why addition and subtraction strategies
work, using place value and the properties of operations ( [Link].B.9 )
and, Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties
of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction
( [Link].B.5 ).
In this unit, students will build on their previous understanding of place value and
addition. Past units included identifying the value of numbers in their place value. I will
reinforce this knowledge in this unit before we begin the new material. This unit will
involve learning four new strategies for two-digit addition. These strategies include making
a ten, break apart, regrouping, and the standard algorithm for addition. Students will learn
to begin addition in the ones place, then move on to the numbers in the tens place. Students
will practice naming, identifying, and using all four of these strategies.
The unit starts with addition that does not involve regrouping, then progresses to
addition that requires regrouping. The unit is based on chapter four of the textbook Go
Math . This is primary math textbook used in my classroom. Each student has their own
copy of the text This unit is signi icant because two digit addition is a building block for
future mathematics skills. Students will build on this knowledge as they advance in
mathematics.
