SEMS PBIS Referral Guidelines 16-17

The document provides guidelines for referring students at South Edgecombe Middle School to the Behavior Intervention Classroom (BIC) or office for disciplinary issues. It outlines three levels of behaviors and the corresponding responses. Level I behaviors are managed in the classroom or by sending the student to their "buddy teacher." Level II behaviors result in a referral to BIC. Level III behaviors require an immediate office referral. It also provides definitions of major problem behaviors and the referral process for repeated BIC visits.

16-17 SEMS PBIS Referral Guidelines

Bounce:
Scholar visits your buddy teacher to fill out a Think Sheet and then complete work from your class. Students can return to
class after at least 10 min? The student only returns once they are ready to return.
Behavior Intervention Classroom (BIC):
Scholar is sent to Mr. Harrell for the duration of the period. Student will complete a Think Sheet and complete work from
your class.
Office Referral:
Office is notified and scholar is escorted or reports to designated location (BIC/office/admin).
Level I behaviors are classroom managed when possible or bounced if necessary. If bounced, parent contact needs to be
made and documented on parent contact log and bounce spreadsheet. Repeated occurrences of the same behavior can
result in BIC.
Level II behaviors are sent directly to BIC; Level I behaviors that are extreme (yelling vs. talking out) can be sent to BIC
also. Scholars may be asked to complete a reflection sheet and have a follow up action (i.e. apology). Work to be

completed should be sent with scholar. Parent contact needs to be made by teacher and recorded on parent contact log.
Mr. Harrell will also make a parent contact.
Level III behaviors are sent directly to the office with a completed referral. Notify the office you have a level III
behavior. Admin/BIC/Office staff will come to your location and escort the scholar(s). If deemed appropriate by the
administration team, you may be asked to send the scholar to the office. Do not send the referral form or any confiscated
items with the scholar.

South Edgecombe Middle School

Behavior Intervention Class
The purpose of the Behavior Intervention Classroom (BIC) is to correct negative behaviors and allow instruction to
continue with minimal disruption. Upon referral to BIC students must have a completed referral and appropriate
assignment to be completed once they complete their behavior reflection. Teachers must always exhaust classroom
procedures prior to a referral to BIC, always log your parent or guardian contact in your log.
1. Teachers may use BIC for the following reasons once all classroom procedures are exhausted (CALL
PARENT/GUARDIAN):
1. Remove student for disruption
2. Remove student to allow time to calm down
3. Disrespect
4. Profanity
5. Argument with another student
6. Others
We will use a shared Google Form to maintain a log of referrals for each student and by each teacher. Our BIC
Coordinator will log the time the student enters BIC and leaves BIC. The BIC coordinator will contact the parent or
guardian if a student is sent to BIC. In most cases, the student will remain in BIC for the rest of the class period. The BIC
coordinator will determine on an as needed basis if a student needs to remain in BIC for a longer period of time and will
connect with Administration.
