DC RC Circuit Analysis Tutorial

This document contains 3 problems involving DC circuits with capacitors and resistors. The first problem involves calculating the time constant, voltage charged after 8 seconds, and half discharge time of a 200uF capacitor charged via a 200kΩ resistor. The second problem involves calculating the resistance and current given the voltage on a 10uF capacitor after 1 second of charging. The third problem involves writing the equation for current over time, and calculating the time constant, current at 60ms, voltage at 60ms, and time to reach 50mA for a 50uF capacitor in series with a 1kΩ resistor connected to a 100V supply.

DC Transients Tutorial (RC Circuits)

1
A capacitor of 200F is charged from a 220V d.c. supply via a 200k resistor for 8
seconds. Calculated EACH of the following:
(a)

The time constant of the circuit.

(b)

The voltage to which the capacitor has charged after 8 seconds.

(c)

After 8 seconds of charging, the supply is replaced with a 300k resistor and

capacitor is discharged. Calculate the time in which the capacitor is half discharged.

volts. find the value of resistance in series with a

capacitor of 10F if, after 1 second of being switched onto a 400V d.c. supply vC =
300V. Also find the value of circuit current at this instant.

A 50F capacitor in series with 1k resistor is suddenly switched onto a 100V d.c.
supply. Write down the equation for the circuit current as a function of time then find;
a) the time constant
b) current after 60ms
c) voltage across capacitor after 60ms
d) time taken for the current to reach 50mA.
