Shear and Bending Moment Diagrams

This document contains 4 problems involving calculating shear and bending moment diagrams for beams with various loading conditions using different methods: 1. Method of Sections is used to analyze a beam and determine maximum shear (30.5781 kN) and bending moment (112.8374 kNm). 2. Method of Sections is again used, finding maximum shear (-30 kN) and bending moment (109.7321 kNm) for beam ABCDEF. 3. Shear and bending moment diagrams are drawn for problems 1 and 2, with maximum shear (31.67 kN) and bending moment (92.5 kNm) reported. 4. The Method of Areas is used to analyze beam ABCDEFG

PROBLEM SET 4

1. Draw the shear and bending moment diagrams for the beam and loadings shown. Indicate the
values at all change of loading positions and at all points of zero shear. Also indicate the
degree of each curve and determine the absolute maximum values of the shear and bending
moment. Use the METHOD OF SECTIONS.
(ANSWER:

Vmax = 30.5781 kN , Mmax = 112.8374 kNm)

(ANSWER:

Vmax = 30.5781 kN , Mmax = 112.8374 kNm)

2. Use the Method of Sections to draw the shear and bending moment diagram of beam
ABCDEF. Indicate the degree of each curve. Identify the value of absolute maximum shear
and bending moment. Note that C is an internal pin and F is a roller support.
(ANSWER: Vmax = 30 kN Mmax = 109.7321 kNm)

3. Draw the shear and bending moment diagrams for problems 1 and 2. Indicate the values at all
change of loading positions and at all points of zero shear. Also indicate the degree of each
curve and determine the absolute maximum values of the shear and bending moment. Use the
method specified for each problem.

(ANSWER: Vmax = 31.67 kN, Mmax = 92.5 kNm)

4. The beam shown below is supported by a pin at A and a roller at G. Use the method of area to
draw the shear and bending moment diagram of the beam ABCDEFG. Indicate the degree of
each curve. Identify the value of absolute maximum shear and bending moment. Also

calculate the value of force P if the horizontal force acting on pin A is
