Types of Positive Displacement Compressors

Compressors are mechanical devices that increase the pressure of air, gas, or vapor and transport it from one location to another. Compressors are broadly classified into positive displacement compressors and dynamic compressors based on how they apply pressure to a fluid. Positive displacement compressors physically reduce the volume of a chamber containing trapped gas to compress it, and are further divided into rotary and reciprocating types. Dynamic compressors accelerate gas to high velocity and convert its kinetic energy to pressure energy through a diffuser before outlet.

Compressor

Compressors are mechanical devices used to increase the pressure of air, gas or vapor and in the process
move it from one location to another. The inlet or suction pressure can be varied from low sub-atmospheric
pressure levels to any pressure level compatible with piping and vessel strength limits.
According to the method which compressors are applying pressure to a fluid, the compressors are broadly
classified to Positive Displacement Compressors and Dynamic Compressors.
Positive Displacement Compressors:
In a positive displacement compressor, gas drawn into a chamber. Then the trapped gas compressed
physically by reducing the volume of the chamber using any mechanism. Positive displacement compressors
are further classified into Rotary Compressors and Reciprocating Compressors.
Dynamic Compressors:
In this type of compressors, the gas is first accelerated to high velocity, and then passed through a diffuser.
The kinetic energy of the gas is converted to pressure energy at diffuser before it leaves through the outlet.
Dynamic compressor are further classified into Centrifugal Compressors and Axial Compressors.
The main compressor types have been shown in the chart below:
