Reflection on Language Teaching Methods

The document provides instructions for a reflection paper assignment on readings about approaches to English language teaching. Students are asked to reflect on their experiences learning English, which approaches they would use and why, the strengths and weaknesses of different methods, and their reaction to a sample lesson video. The reflection paper should be 350-750 words and exhibit the student's own stance, not just summarize the readings. It will be graded on writing quality, format, and addressing the questions through a critical reflective discussion referring to the assigned readings. Higher scores will be given for thorough reflection and discussion of the questions and readings.

4 APPROACHES TO ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING 2016-2017

REFLECTION TASK 1
Please read the assigned readings of week 2 & 3. (Note that Celce-Murcias article
is a good introduction and a summary. In Larsen-Freeman and Andersons
chapters, you will see the details of GTM, DM and ALM. They are very easy to
read and give a good outline of each method. Richards and Rodgerss chapters
are more complex and detailed, but useful for a thorough understanding.) Write a
reflection paper on the readings answering the following questions:
1. Which of the approaches discussed in the chapter have you personally
experienced as a language learner? Would you use those approaches as a
language teacher? If yes, why? If not, what approaches would you use?
2. Do you think there is a best method?
3. Which aspects of each method (GTM, DM and ALM) would you use when
you become a teacher? Why? What might be the weak points of DM and
ALM for the students and for the native or non-native teachers?
4. Please watch/listen to the video on a sample lesson based on ALM
(available on metuclass). Regardless of how old-fashioned the video may
look/sound (sorry, no current ones are available), please follow the lesson
from the beginning to the end and write how the lesson makes you feel.
What draws your attention/what bothers you?

WARNING on REFLECTION WRITING (consisting of 350-750

words)

While writing your reflection report, make sure that you are not
summarizing the reading materials but reflecting on them exhibiting
your own stance on the topic. You will be graded based on the
quality of your reflection report and some basic writing guidelines.
Before posting your reflection report, it is advisable that you selfcheck your post taking into consideration the grading rubric below.
RUBRIC for EVALUATION
1 point for accurate and fluent writing; 1 point for format (following
the rules of a formal assignment including a proper print-out,
margins, spacing, font, etc.), 3 points for content = 5 points in total
3 points if the reflection paper is a critical and reflective discussion
addressing all the guiding questions and referring to the assigned readings.
2 points if most of the guiding questions are addressed with a reflective
discussion as described above; if the post meets most of the task
requirements but falls short in some aspects
1 point if the post lacks a proper reflection to most of the guiding questions
and there is no reference to assigned readings and/or they are too
superficially addressed.
