Process Summary (Page limit: 0.25 page)
This section must consist of a concise process summary as discussed in lectures.
Process Synthesis (Page Limit: 5 pages 1 page per step)
You are required to develop an initial plant design for the production of Drying Oil
using the 5 step systematic design process presented in lectures.
You must present 5 A4 pages, each one epresenting one step of the synthesis
process. The last step should be a semipictorial or schematic epresentation, as
presented in lectures.
At each step, you should explain the reasoning behind each of your process
design decisions, identifying any heuristic principles you have used, and any
literature references.
2.1
Eliminate differences in molecular types Chemical reactions
2.2
Distribute chemicals by matching sources and sinks Mixing and recycles
2.3
Eliminate differences in composition Separations
2.4
Eliminate differences in temperatures, pressures and phase Temperature,
pressure and phase change
2.5
Integrate tasks Unit operations
3. Process Flow Diagram (PFD)
3.1 Equipment list
must consist of a three-column-table which contains the description for each
piece of equipment.
The equipment name should comprise more than just single word names like
Pump 1, but be partially descriptive of the equipments role.
The description needs to consist of at least the material of construction, some
kind of rating/capacity and type description
4. Rationale (Page Limit: 1 page)
rationale behind your stream table i.e. your mass balances.
In this section, you need to list all the assumptions you have made, as well as
justify them.
5. Thinking about the process. (Page Limit: 0.5 page)
Does your proposed process configuration address the optimisation of sizing
of the separation units?
In your opinion, is this a feasible project?
6. Health, safety and environmental impact evaluation. (Page Limit: 1 page)
The safety evaluation should be an identification of the risks in the design of this
plant
considering the key issues for an inherently safe plant. Use a risk assessment tool
presented in your lectures to identify one particular hazard you have identified in
your
chosen process.
Ensure that the relevant data has been captured in the database creation step of
process
synthesis and present it in this section.
7. Other Information
Assume that a year equals 8160 hours which allows for periodic shut-down and
maintenance
3.2 Stream Table
should include kg/hr and kmol/h total flows for each stream,
should indicate wt% and mol% for each species in the streams.
