Analyzing Donald Trump's Personality Type

This paper analyzes Donald Trump's personality using Jung's theory, which classifies personalities into introversion/extroversion, intuition/sensing, feeling/thinking, and perceiving/judging dimensions. The paper determines that Trump's personality type is ESTP based on his career ambitions, risk-taking behavior, and tendency to make decisions based on logic rather than feelings. As an ESTP, Trump is adventurous, flexible, and speaks his mind without caring what others think. Jung's theory provides a useful framework for analyzing Trump's consistent personality traits over time.

Introduction
Personality is not entirely compromised by change and environment nor is it completely
consistent. It is having them together. It is impossible to point out the personality aspects that are
consistent. However, there are theories that have made attempts to explain the reasons as to why
personality can be found to be consistent and the way which it changes over a period of time
(Mischel, 2013 p 5). Theories by different scholars have been able to give means that are useful
in measuring personality, and may have biological attributes, that is genes complementing in
order to have consistency. There are other theories that maintain that personality foundations are
based on how children are brought up by their parents or guardians. In addition, they argue that
the environment and learning are some of the major factors that make contributions to
consistency and sometimes to change in personality. Some take these theories further and argue
that the behavior developed by a person is as a result of the environment and changing
circumstances, therefore it is impossible to measure personality and that it is not consistent.
Although different theories provide vies that contradict each other, they all have part truths and
offer insights that are interesting about personality and its consistency over a period of time. This
paper will major on the theory by Jung while analyzing Donald Trumps personality.
Jungs theory suggests that a persons personality can be classified by their general attitude
preference. There are three classifications namely;

Introverts and the Extroverts

This signifies the direction and source of an individuals expression of energy. An introvert
source and direction of energy is their world thus it comes from internally while the extroverts
direct their energy externally.

Intuition and Sensing

This represents the way which an individual perceives information. Intuition means that an
individual believes information gotten from their own internal world while sensing means that an
individual believes information gotten from the external world.

Feeling and Thinking

This represents the way in which an individual processes information. Feeling means that, an
individual makes the decision based on their emotions, thinking on the other hand means that a
person makes decision based on logic.
These three areas brought across by Jung are dimensions that are bipolar whereby every pole
stands for a different preference, in other words, they are dichotomies. He also stated that every
person has one of the above functions dominant that is either a function of judging and
perception. One researcher by the name Myers, made a proposal that perceiving and judging
relationship be made a forth dichotomy affecting types of personalities. This reflects the way
which an individual implements the information they get. Perceiving means that an individual
may more likely to explore or improvise other options while judging means that an individual as
a rule, an individual plans out events in their life and sticks to it till the end. These four are the
MBTI facets used in identification of an individuals personality (Cohen et al, 2013 p.20).
The four preferences named above then produce sixteen different personality types, with each
one of them having two poles that dominate in an individual. There are sixteen different types of
personalities. Every personality is assigned an acronym with four letter of their preference
corresponding combination. The first letter represents an individuals general attitude, that is, I

represents for introvert and E stands for extrovert. The second letter represents an individuals
dimension for intuition and sensing N for intuition and S for sensing. The third letter represents
an individual way of interpreting information F for feeling and T is for thinking. The last but not
least is an individuals preferences in perceiving and judging, with P standing for perception and
J for judging.
Donald Trump who is an investor, politician, businessman and television personality can be said
to have the ESTP personality. By looking closely at the career and life of Trump, it is clear that
the MBTIs ESTP personality is in action. Individuals with this personality type tend to have a
strong sensing preference, this is due to the fact that these individual tend to show interest in
things going on around them and involving themselves in them. They are also known to doing
things and learning from their experiences. This leads to these individuals plunging and getting
into things and trusting their ability to appropriately respond to upcoming issues (Myres, 1998
p2). Trump is known to have his hands on almost everything he thinks he can achieve. He is an
investor and business man that is very successful, is a TV personality in business reality show
belonging to him and is also an author. He has also tried his hand in politics and despite the fact
that he dropped out in the 2012 presidential elections, he is now running for the presidential seat
and he is stronger than ever.
The ESTP type of personality is known to process information they get with their thinking rather
than feeling. This means that their decision making is mostly done using reasoning and analysis
of logic and what makes sense to them (Myres, 1998 p 3). Trumps career in business is based on
reasoning and analysis of logic, this has assisted him with his ventures in the real estate. This is
also clear in his reality show where he is seen firing contestants based on their performance in

the show. This aspect has even spread to his personal life where he has had numerous failed
marriages because of the fact that he has allowed work to come before his family.
This personality type is also seen to be adventurous, flexible and risk taking (Myres, 1998 p3).
Trump is known to be one to take financial risks without second thought. Though he now in a
pretty good financial point, he has had a point in life where his ventures in real estate
overstretched and nearly left him bankrupt. This however did not stop him from taking further
risks in business and that has paid off and is now among the richest people in the United States.
Trump is also known to speak his mind without caring what people think of him. This is an
attribute very common with people with the ESTP personality type. In his campaigns in the
presidential race, he has spoken against different minority groups and despite the backlash by the
public, he continues to hold his stand. He has made sure that the public knows exactly what he
intends to do when he elected without sugar coating. This is also very well portrayed in his
reality business TV show.
In conclusion, the theory by Jung is pretty reliable in analyzing the personalities of different
individuals. It is able to narrow down from a wide range of preferences to settling with the ones
that best describe individuals personalities. It is easier to analyze an individuals personalities
using the parameters set.
