Structural Analysis: Slope-Deflection Method

This document discusses using slope-deflection equations to analyze a continuous beam with three members (AB, BC, CD) and four supports (A, B, C, D). Fixed-end moments are calculated for each member. Slope-deflection equations are written for each member using chord rotations and support fixity conditions. Joint rotations θB and θC are determined by substituting the slope-deflection equations into joint equilibrium equations and solving simultaneously. Numerical values are then substituted to calculate the specific joint rotations. End shears and moments are determined for each member, as are the support reactions. An equilibrium check is also performed.

Example 1

By using fixed-end moment expression, we calculated the fixed-end moments as

follows :

The Slope-deflection equation for the three members of the continuous beams
can now be written by using :

Since none of the supports of the continuous beams translates, the chord rotations
of the three members are zero. Also, since supports A and D are fixed, the rotation

A = D = 0. By appliying that equation for member AB, with A as the near end and
B as the far end, we obtain the slope-deflection :

For member BC :

For member CD

Joint Rotation :
To determine the unknown joint rotation B and C, we subtitute the slope
deflection eq into the joint equibilium eq :

And solve the resulting system of equations simultaneously for B and C. Thus by
subtituting eqs, we obtain :

By subtituting te numerical values of E = 29.000; ksi = 29.000(12) 2; ksf and I = 500

in4 = (500/124) ft4; we determine the rotations of joints B and C to be :

B = - 0,0011 rad or 0,0011 rad

Members and Moment :

Members End Shears :

and

C = 0,0018 rad
