PRESENT TENSE SIMPLE

A. DAILY ROUTINES AND HABITS

USE ADVERBS OF FREQUENCY:

USUALLY, ALWAYS, EVERY DAY,


EVERY MONTH , EVERY WEEK,
EVERY YEAR,
ON SUNDAYS, OFTEN, NEVER,
RARELY.
DO NOT FORGET TO PLACE THE
ADVERB OF FREQUENCY!!!

I get up at 8 oclock (every day).


I always drink coffee in the morning.
I never get up late.

B. PERMANENT SITUATIONS
Mary teaches History. (she is a teacher)
A doctor cures sick people.
A taylor makes clothes.

C. FACTS AND THINGS THAT ARE GENERALLY TRUE


The Earth moves round the sun.
Metals sink when dropped into water.
Water boils at 100 degrees.
In winter snows.

D. PLANNED FUTURE ACTIVITIES


WITH VERBS:

COME, GO, LEAVE, BEGIN, END, FINISH

The train leaves at 10:30.


The movie begins at 8 p.m.
Our winter holiday begins on December 22nd.

E. MOMENTARY ACTIONS ( DESCRIBING ACTIONS IN


DEMONSTRATIONS, CEREMONIES, STAGE DIRECTIONS,
RADIO AND TV COMMENTARIES).
Bill gets out of the bed, comes downstage and waits.
The football player kicks the ball, runs..

ADVERBS OF FREQUENCY- WORD ORDER


USUALLY, ALWAYS, OFTEN, RARELY, NORMALLY
!! BEFORE THE MAIN VERB (PREDICATE) (EXCEPT TO BE)
He always goes to the market on Saturdays.
Subject + adverb of frequency + predicate (main verb) + direct object + place + time

WITH THE VERB TO BE ADVERBS GO AFTER THE THE VERB TO BE


John is often absent.
They are usually on time.

BUT, IF THERE IS AN AUXILIARY , THE ADVERB GOES BETWEEN THE


AUXILIARY AND THE VERB TO BE
I have never been abroad.

WITH MODAL VERBS : SHOULD , CAN, COULD:


Modal verb + adverb of frequency + verb
You should always turn the light off.
He can never remember my name.
SOMETIMES AND OCASIONALLY CAN GO IN FRONT/MIDDLE /END OF THE
SENTENCE.
Sometimes she skates
She is sometimes late.
She is late sometimes.
ADVERBS EXPRESSING TIME : EVERY DAY, EVERY WEEK, EVERY YEAR ,
ON SUNDAYS CAN GO: AT THE END OR AT THE BEGINNING
I go to school every day.
On Tuesdays I go shopping.
