Reflection Paper in Integral Calculus
Ever since I chose the applied mathematics program, I have already been afraid of the
subject integral calculus. Aside from the intimidating appeal of the words integral calculus
when you read it, encountering and dealing with all the advanced mathematical equations
involved with the subject is what I really feared. In this second semester of my second year in
college, I have no choice but to face this fear.
However, when sir Enrico Yambao, my professor in integral calculus, discussed the first
lessons, I became interested. Eventually, my fear of the subject turned into a feeling that is
challenging for me. I have learned so many equations, techniques, and their background, history,
and applications. Antidifferentiation, substitution rule, definite and indefinite integral, and area
under and between the curve are just some of the mathematical knowledge that I have acquired.
Of all the lessons, my favorite are the techniques of integration because this lesson made me able
to apply it to other lessons such as multiple integration, trapezoid rule, Simpsons rule, and
Fibonacci sequence. But despite all of these knowledge, I have learned a lot from this subject
that is beyond academic.
Beyond the academic and intellectual value, the subject taught me real values. Integral
calculus taught me how to be careful with every step of my equation. It made me realize that one
mistake will lead to the discrepancy of the next. Because of all the step-by-step procedure that is
needed to come up with the correct answer, I learned how to think more critically. Not that I do
not want a good grade because who does not want a good grade, right?; but integral calculus
drove me to study the lessons not for the sake of my grades but for the sake of knowledge itself.
I know that I am careless. I know that there are times wherein I will experience mental block.
Being a student in this subject has given me the opportunity to practice the areas where I am
weak, to make myself a better individual, to step out of the box and face the things that are still
unknown to me.
