Platelet Disorders and Treatments

This document outlines the purpose, learning objectives, and preparation for a module on bleeding disorders. The purpose is for students to learn about platelet disorders, differentiate related conditions like DIC and TTP, and understand treatment options. The 7 learning objectives cover recognizing the platelet's role, classifying disorders, differentiating two diseases, identifying causes of increased platelet destruction, and treatment of conditions. Students are assigned chapters in a textbook and a presentation to review in advance.

BLEEDING

Dr. Sally Temraz_March 2, 2015

A. Purpose of the module:

By the conclusion of this TBL module, students will be able to classify the
disorders related to platelets into inherited and acquired, qualitative and
quantitative, with special emphasis on drug and disease induced platelet
disorders. Students should also differentiate disseminated intravascular
coagulation from thrombotic thrombocytopenia purpura (TTP) both clinically
and by laboratory investigations. They should also define the treatment
options for these disorders. Students should also be able to recognize the
pathophysiology and treatment of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP)
as well as heparin induced thrombocytopenia. They should also be able to
differentiate between vonWillebrand disease and Bernard-Soulier disease
with particular emphasis on their clinical features as well as laboratory
findings.
B. Learning objectives :
1. Recognize the role of platelets in hemostasis.
2. Classify platelet disorders into inherited and acquired with a particular
focus on drug induced platelet dysfunction.
3. Differentiate VonWillebrand disease from Bernard-Soulier disease.
