(Villains enter one by one, alternating sides)

Malef
Once upon a time.... Well, more like several years ago, the heroes that you know and
love Yknow, Belle and her Beast, good ol Cindy, the sleeping brat, and so on
banded together to form the United States of Arudon.
Yzma
The governing body of Arudon then decided to round up all of their foesthe villains
and their sidekicks and childrenand banish them to a small island. Out of sight, out of
mind, right?
CD
Not quite. Several months ago, our children and their friends were sent to school in
Arudon by proclamation of the royal family in hopes of rehabilitating them.
Ursula
The royals wanted to train the evil out of our children. Make them better human beings.
Cruel and unusual punishment if you ask me.
MG
The children were given a simple task; to help us overthrow the people that had locked
us away in the first place and to help us take our places as the rightful rulers of Arudon.
DF
But they failed. They betrayed us for the so-called heroes and ran off to find their
happily-ever-afters, leaving the rest of us behind.
RQ
So we tried again. And again. And again. Until finally, the government of Arudon
decreed that all villains were to be sent through Goodness Rehabilitation, or to the
dungeons, until they could come up with a new way to contain us.

That's where we are. No magic, no reflective surfaces, no freedom. Just each other.
Hold on, youre about to meet us. But first. this happened.
(Villains get in their cells)
EQ
(From audience, ends in her cell) [[Come Little Children]]
(Mal/Jay/Evie enter R)

Jay
I dont know if this is a good idea guys. You heard Fairy Godmother. Theyll do anything
to try and get out of there.
Evie
Yeah! Its been nearly four months since we stopped the villains from taking over, and
theyve already tried to escape three times.
Mal
Look, if you two dont wanna come with me, fine. But I have to talk to my mom, Evie. I
need answers. And Jay, I thought you wanted to see your dad. Its been almost a year
since youve seen him.
Jay
(A beat) I know. And I do. I just dont want you to get hurt. And Im nervous! I havent
seen my dad since way before we even came to Arudon. What if he disappeared
because of me?
Evie
You know thats ridiculous. Im sure he just had something really important to do.
Jay
For this long? I dont think so. What if hes not even here?
Mal
Nobody is left on the island, theyre either in Goodness Rehabilitation Centers or here,
in the dungeons. And we checked all the centers. He has to be here.

If you say so.
Mal
I do say so. Now come on.
(Mal/Jay/Evie exit L, Villains enter from various and go to their cells but more
downstage, Mal/Jay/Evie enter R)
Evie
Wow, that was easy. I didnt think that guard would just let us in like that.
Mal
Well, helping save the kingdom has its benefits. (Pause) And I bribed him.
Evie
This is why were friends.
Mal
Yeah yeah. (A beat) Hey, Evie! look! Theres your mom! And mine.
Jay
Go on, thats what you came here for isnt it?
Mal
Yeah youre right. (She walks over to Malef) Mom? (Malef ignores her) Mother. I
Malef
Do you hear that EQ? Sounds like theres a rat in here.
Mal
Mother, I know youre still angry with me, but I need to speak with you. I need to know
why
Malef

(Laughs) Why! She wants to know why, ladies! (To Mal) Why what, darling? Why were
all locked up in here? That ones on you.
Mal
No, I meant why you tried to take over Arudon in the first place. What drove you to to
evil. Why you didnt want to try the Goodness Rehabilitation. I deserve answers.
Malef
There arent enough hours in the day for those answers, sweet-cheeks. Now if you dont
mind, Im terribly busy rotting away into nothing because my only daughter sold me out.
Yzma
That Goodness Rehab is a crock anyway!
Evie
And who are you?
Yzma
Yzmas the name, Chemistrys the game.
Jay
What do you mean about the Goodness Rehab? Its working so far with the others. It
worked with us.
Yzma
It worked because you wanted to be good. And because you had had what do they
call it? Whats cmon, whats the word? Hope! Hope, thats it, you had hope.

Evie
You dont want to be good? You dont have hope that you could change?
Yzma
Whats good ever done for me? Look at me, I was good once and I still wound up here!
Jay
You were good? You? But I heard you were a mad scientist!

Yzma
Thats what they want you to think. Sure, one teeny tiny lab explosion and suddenly
youre a mad scientist. But thats all twisted. It wast even my fault!
Mal
Sure it wasnt. Whos fault was it then?
Yzma
My lab assistant! The emperor had us working overtime, Kronk mixed up two vials, and
BOOM! We never meant to hurt anybody, you know. But the gasses from the blast
turned several villagers into llamas, which wouldnt have been a that big of a deal except
that the emperor was one of those villagers. I tracked him down and got him changed
back, even offered to change back the other villagers, but the emperor decided I was
evil and had me sent to the Isle without a second thought.
Mal
So why didnt you do the Goodness program? Prove that youre not bad?
Yzma
I shouldnt have to prove anything! Nobody wants to hear my side of the story anyway,
so why bother trying to tell it.
Evie
Yeah, but
SQ
Oh, let it go! If she wants to sulk in her corner with her little science experiments all day,
thats on her.
(Mal, Evie start to walk over, but Jay stops them)
Jay
(Whispers) Wait! Dont you guys know who that is? (They shake their head) Thats the
Snow Queen! My dad told me about her once. She tried to use a giant mirror to turn the
whole world to ice!

SQ
And she has fantastic hearing. You three are quite rude, you know, gossiping like that.
Jay
Says the one who tried to start the next ice age.
Mal
Jay, knock it off. (walks to SQ) Whats your deal, Frosty?
SQ
Marie Curie over here is annoying, but she has a point. Nobody really wants to hear our
sides of the stories. They have their heroes, they needed villains, and thats why were
down here. No amount of Goodness Rehabilitation can fix a bad reputation.
Evie
So what, youre actually a good guy too? Yeah. Right.
SQ
The world isnt just good and bad. Theres a lot of in between.
Evie
Such as?
SQ
From the day I was born, people knew I was different, that I had ice magic. They
decided right on sight to treat me differently, like a monster. So I decided I wasnt going
to be defined by societys expectations. But embracing my magic and trying to do
something useful with it made the townspeople uncomfortable. It made them scared. I
could have spent my life trying to figure out how to make people accept me, but I finally
had to get over it. I had to let it go, and be myself.
Mal
What do you mean?
(When music starts, Villains ad-lib. Not this again, I hate this song, etc)

SQ
[[Let It Go]]
Mal
Now wait, hold on. You just got slapped with an Evil title because people didnt like you?
And youre just living with it?
Evie
What about the giant mirror?
Jay
Yeah, I heard you snow blasted your kingdom and put ice in your sisters head. That
doesnt sound very good.
SQ
Thats not true! My sister is the one who helped me accept my true powers and Id never
do anything to hurt her. That was all a rumor spread by the townspeople because they
were scared of me. Much like what happened to your king Adam. It was all just a story
to make me look like a monster. I told you, they have their heroes. They dont need
people like us. They twisted up our stories because it was convenient.
Jay
(To Mal) You dont actually believe this stuff do you? Theyre villains, all of them. Our
parents included. We cant trust them.
Mal
You dont believe that do you? I mean look, if we could choose to be good, why cant
they?
Evie
I think shes right, Mal. Like with my mom. Its always been mirror this and poison
apple that. And shes called the Evil Queen for crying out loud, Evils in her name!
Mal
I think youre both wrong. It would take a lot of work but she could be good. Your dad
too, Jay.

Ursula
Jafar is way past good Im afraid.
Jay
Wait, you know who my dad is?
Ursula
Oh dear girl I dont need a crystal ball to know that youre Jafars child. Or to know that
hes not here.
Evie
What are you talking about?
Jay
I got this, Mal. (To Ursula) What are you talking about?
Ursula
Take a look around! Youre not gonna find him with us!
Mal
But nobody was left on the Island! (To the others) And we checked all the Goodness
centers, right?
Ursula
Which means?
Jay/Mal/Evie
He wasnt on the Island!
Ursula
(Cackles) Exactly! Took you long enough!
Evie
Wait. How do we know we can trust you? I know who you are, you tried to trick your
niece into giving up her voice and her boyfriend for you, didn't you?
Mal

Yeah, and I heard she got turned into sea foam because of you.
Ursula
(Angry) Thats not what happened!
(Villains ad-lib here we go again Oh no etc)
Ursula
That version of the story is twisted. I would never hurt my niece. I was queen! But Triton
didnt think women should have power or independence of any kind, especially not
women with magic. He stole my crown, banished me to a cave, and forbade my nieces
from ever seeing me again! So I did what I could do. I used my magic to help other
people. Its not my fault that magic always comes with a price, but I didnt do what
everyone says I did. I mean yes, I may have tried to turn my brother into seaweed, but
besides that I only used my magic to help Ariel find her true love. Just like I helped Jafar
find his lamp.
Jay
Wait, what?
Mal
Yeah, what? Jafar found his lamp?
Evie
But the lamps magic wouldnt have worked on the Island anyway.
Ursula
I found a way to kickstart it, and I made a deal with Dear Old Dad.
Malef
(Suddenly interested) And you never thought to mention this little fact to the rest of us?
Ursula
[[Poor Unfortunate Souls - 0:30-1:48]]

Ursula

I can help you reunite with your father, you know. I can tell you where he is, help you get
there, But like I said, all magic has a cost.
Jay
I dunno....
Ursula
[[Poor Unfortunate Souls - 2:59-3:39]]
Evie
Youre only gonna tell us where Jays dad is if she give you her voice? Isnt that what
you did to Ariel?
Jay
Yeah, forget it witch. I'm not falling for that. I like my voice where it is.
Ursula
Your loss then. But you'll never find him by yourself.
Jay
(A beat) I was right, this wasn't a good idea. Cmon guys, we need to go.
Mal
(Frowns) Yeah, you're probably right. We can try again tomorrow.
(They go to exit L, but DF stops Jay, hands her a card)
DF
(Stage whisper) The Tiger Head Cave.
Jay
What?
DF
That's where he's at, and my friends can help you get there.
Jay

(Mal/Evie Re-enter L)
Mal
Jay, come on, I thought we were leaving.

Evie
That witch doctor's more dangerous than Ursula. We need to go.
DF
[[Friends on the Other Side 0:00-1:20]]
(Villains singing backup)
Mal
You don't have magic down here.
DF
(While laying out cards) Dont need magic to read the cards, girl. Ursula helped Jafar
track down his lamp and it sent him back to the Tiger Head Cave, and I can help you get
to it. For a small fee.
[[Friends on the Other Side 2:35-end]]
Jay
Was something supposed to happen?
Mal
I told you. Theres no magic down here.
(DF starts laughing, other villains join in)

Shoulda seen the look on your face, kid, priceless! You really thought I could help you!
Nobody comes back from the Tiger Head Cave, not since Aladdin did it back in 92. I got
you good!
Evie
You lied to her?
DF
Were villains, its what we do kid.
(Jay runs off SL, upset. Mal shoots the villains a look and runs off after her. Villains all
exit)
(Jay enters SR, Mal, Evie following)
Mal
Jay, wait!
Jay
I told you! I knew this wasnt a good idea! Your mom didnt help you, and I have even
more questions about my dad.
Evie
Hey, cmon Jay, dont let them get to you. At least now you know where Jafar is?
Jay
Howd he get there though? Why didnt he say anything to me? How am I supposed to
find this dumb cave anyway?
Mal
Fairy Godmother can help, cant she? Im sure she could spare a wish
Jay
Whats a wish gonna do? Im gonna get my hopes up again for nothing.
Evie
We believe in you Jay. And I know that youre gonna find your dad again.

Thats it! Jay, youre a genius!
Jay
Whats it? What did I do?
Mal
Those villains! They need someone to believe in them! Snow Queen said it herself,
nobody has really wanted to hear their stories, but what if we did?
Evie
Wait, why? What would that accomplish?
Mal
Well first of all, we could help them decide to be good. If we told their stories, they might
want to be rehabilitated and they wouldnt have to be in the dungeons anymore. Second
of all
Jay
They might be more willing to help me find my dad!

Mal
Exactly! Lets go, well come back tomorrow, and I think I have a plan. But first, I need
my spellbook.
(Exit SL. Villains enter to their cells)
EQ
[[I Put a Spell on You - slower version, passing the time]]
Malef

Who poisoned your apple?
RQ
Yeah, what's got your cards all shuffled, Maleficent?
MG
It's her daughter, obviously. That's the face of a forlorn mother if I ever saw one.
Malef
Quiet all of you, I'm thinking! If I know my daughter, she'll be coming back again today.
We can use that to our advantage. Bust outta here.
Yzma
Oh I know! We could turn her into a flea! A harmless little flea (Continue until cut off)
EQ
That didn't work with the guard and it won't work now.
Yzma
And you know this how?
(Improv bickering, other villains join in)
Malef
Silence! (Cast goes silent) Well play along. Well tell our stories like Crazy Pants and
Snowflake did. Well act like we want to be good. If they can convince Fairy Godmother
that we really want to try that goodness rehab nonsense, shell let us out and well be
free.

MG
Im still confused, what are we preparing for?
RQ

Im with her. What exactly is your plan once were free?

Malef
Were gonna change the world! Well send the heroes to that cursed island and well
take their places. They want twisted, and were gonna give it to them. No more Snow
Whites, no more Rapunzels, no more Tianas. Well be in control, just like weve always
planned!
[[Be Prepared 2:17-end]]
(Villains cackle, return to cells. Mal/Jay/Evie enter SR, all holding notebooks)
Evie
So.. where do we start?
Mal
Maybe we should split up. Wed cover more ground that way, right?
Evie
Yeah, good idea! Ill take the Queen of Hearts.
Jay
And Ill start with the Shadow Man.
Evie
Are you sure thats a good idea, Jay?
Jay
Well yeah. He may not be able to get me to my dad, but he still knows a lot about him.
How to find him.
Mal
If youre sure you can handle it (Jay nods) Then I guess Ill start with, uh, whoever that
is near the Snow Queen.
(They split up. Jay, Evie, villains pantomime in the background)

The witch who kidnapped Rapunzel?
MG
(Sighs) No. I took care of her until the king and queen decided they wanted her back.
Mal
So you didnt kidnap her? But thats what everyone says.
MG
And thats wrong. But how should you know, youre just a child.
Mal
Well what really happened?
(MG looks to Malef who urges her)
MG
Ive always wanted to be a mother, you know. But I grew too old, so I took to nannying
and healing. When the king and queen had a baby, she fell ill. Doctors from all over the
land couldnt figure it out so they sent for me. I came with a rare, magical flower and
made a formula for the girl. It healed her instantly but the flowers magic made the girl
glow. Literally. It gave her magic and that scared the king and queen. They worried what
the public would think, so they didnt want to raise her, and asked me to take the girl out
of the kingdom.
Mal
But what about the tower?

The kingdom was dangerous. Bandits and monsters everywhere. If anyone knew I had
a princess, or that she had magic, wed be in trouble. So I hid her away. One day, she
ran away. She found out she was the princess and accused me of kidnapping her. When
the king and queen saw that she looked, well, normal, they twisted the real story around
and let the kidnapping rumor spread, then had me sent to the Island so I couldnt say
what really happened.
Mal
So you raised her, treated her like a daughter, and she just turned her back on you?
Malef
Sound familiar?
Mal
I didnt turn my back on you, I just didnt want to be bad anymore.
MG
You should be grateful, young lady, that you have a mother at all. She was trying to
make a better life for you.
[[Mother Knows Best 0:40-2:34]]
Mal
You? Have a request for me?
MG
(Nods) Hear your mother out. She just wants to be closer to you.
Mal
Ill try. But Im not making any promises.
MG

(Mal fades into background convo, focus switches to Evie and RQ)

Your card tricks are so cool. You can do all that without magic? Like, real magic?
RQ
Just because Im not a witch doesnt mean the magic isnt real. I can make you believe
in something you cant explain. Sounds like magic to me.
Evie
Wow, I never thought about it like that before.
RQ
I always wanted to be a magician. Card tricks are my favorite, but I had a pet bunny I
practiced on when I was a girl too. The bunny got out one day and I chased him, but he
led me to Wonderland. Some of the people there looked like cards, you know. I showed
them my own cards, and some of my tricks, and they were so amazed that they made
me their leader!
Evie
But what about all the 'Off with their heads' stuff?
RQ
(Sighs) That was all just a misunderstanding, really. I have a trick where I put someone
into a magic box and make it look like I'm cutting their head off, but really it's just a
dummy. But the Cards had never seen something like that, and they were terrified! They
got it all twisted. Word spread that I was a monster who cut people's heads off for no
reason. They were all scared of me, but at least they respected me, so I kept it up.
[[Off With Their Heads]]
Evie
If it was all a trick, how did you end up on the island, or in the dungeons? I'm sure if you
told everyone the truth, you'd be out of here in no time,

If people found out I was a fraud, nobody would like me anymore. Nobody would respect
me. So when Alice came and defeated the Jabberwock, she had me sent to the Island
and I had to go along with it. Same with coming here.
Evie
Thats not true. I think people would like you more if they knew you were good.
RQ
Oh, I dont know. Id rather stay
(Malef clears her throat loudly)
RQ
Oh! Um, I mean, youre right I want to be free! Time to (she glances to Malef) Time to
turn over a new leaf?
Evie
Perfect!
(Evie fades into background convo, focus switches to Jay and DF)

Its true! My friends are powerful, they showed me how to read the cards.

DF
(A beat, then shakes his head)
Jay

Wait, seriously? Is it because you turn people into frogs?

DF
Youve got it twisted, little girl. First - that was one person. Who turned someone else
into a frog by mistake. Second - Technically, I didnt do that. My Friends did. People
didnt like me way before that.

Jay
Shocker.
DF
Hey! Its not my fault! People just didnt want to talk to me. They called me names,
thought I was weird. But I met my Friends and they taught me all sorts of magic. When I
met the prince, my friends got jealous and tricked me into changing him. I dont enjoy
hurting people.
(Malef gives him a thumbs up)
Jay
So why did you lie to me yesterday? That hurt a lot.
DF
I dont owe you anything, kid. If you want to know about your old man, you need to start
with the Tiger Head Cave.
Jay
Thanks, I guess.
(Kids come to center stage)
Evie
Wow, there are a lot more to these guys than I thought.
Mal
Definitely. I wonder what Fairy Godmother will think.

Jay
Not really, but maybe when we get back Ill ask Belle if he has any books in her library
about the Tiger Head Cave.
Mal
That sounds like a good idea. Now. (She looks at the villains) Who should we talk to
next?
(CD clears throat)
Evie
Are you ready to talk to your mom?
(CD makes louder noise)
Mal
Im not sure. What about
(CD makes even louder noise, gestures)
Mal
What about Cruella?
CD
Oh, me?
(Kids roll their eyes, walk over)
Evie
What could you possibly have to say thats different from the story we know about you,
Cruella?
Jay
Yeah, you make coats out of dogs. Theres no redeeming that.

My dad definitely did that.

(kids and some villains laugh at the end, CD pouts)

Im not that bad! I dont have yellow eyes, and I dont hide under rocks!
Evie
Uh, what about the dog coat thing?

CD
You cant blame me for my love of fashion. I always wanted to be a famous designer. I
was for a while too. But nobody appreciated my talent or my taste in rare or unusual
materials! Sure, alligator boots and mink coats are all the rage, but once you make a
garment out of an animal some consider a pet, then youre a villain! Ill have you know
that the pattern of a dalmatian is unlike anything in the animal kingdom. Its not as
twisted as it sounds.

(They start to walk away, CD stops them)

Jay
What do you mean?
CD
Everyone leaves when they find out what I make my clothes out of. Even my Carla wont
visit me down here.
[[Stay With Me]]
(Kids share a look)
Mal
We have to go, we do. But well make sure Carla comes down here to talk to you okay?
(Cruella nods, the kids regroup again)
Jay
Look, I know you guys came down here for answers, but if you cant handle it
Mal
No, we have to.
Mal
Yeah, if Ursula and the Queen of Hearts have a backstory, so does my mom.
Evie
If Mals doing in, so am I.

Well Prince Charming Junior is still at his boarding school. So no. But I know hes out
there!

(Malef tries to get EQs attention, get her back on track.)
Mal
(Clears throat) Evie, we have a job to do!
Evie
Oh! Yeah, sorry!
EQ

I need to know, mother. Why you tried to poison Snow White, and why you kept trying to
escape. Didnt you ever want to try the goodness rehab?
Jay
Yeah, and why you still call yourself Evil Queen. A bit grand, dont you think?
EQ
My name is Grimhilde, for your information.
Jay
Yikes Id stick with Evil Queen.
(Mal/Evie give her a look)
EQ
I never wanted to be evil. Evie, you have to believe me. I didnt have many friends
growing up, but I wanted people to like me so I became obsessed with being beautiful.
When I married Snow Whites father, he bought me an enchanted mirror to tell me how
beautiful I was every day. But the mirror did something to me, it twisted my heart. It
made me believe that there was always one person in the world prettier than me, and
that she was keeping people from liking me. It convinced me to give Snow the apple, but
after that, I couldnt take it any more. I smashed the mirror and helped the dwarves find
her. The prince heard what happened though and had me locked away. He didnt care
that I had no control.
Evie
But mom, what about the piece of mirror you gave me? And why didnt you want to try
being good?
EQ
When the mirror broke, so did the magics strength. It can do its job and show you
anything without corrupting you too. (Looks around at other villains) And People here
like me for me, despite what Ive done. I dont have to be beautiful down here. And
besides, the Snow Queen is right. You cant fix a bad reputation.
(Malef nudges her, and EQ remembers the plan)

Oh! Oh. Um, however, I have changed my mind. Evie, I want to be good, I want to show
the people of Arudon that I really have changed.
Evie
Really?
Mal
(suspicious) Really?
EQ
Yes. I didnt have control, but I do now, and I want to be out there. With you.
Malef
Oh wow.
Mal
Something to add, mother?
Malef
No, no, dont mind me.
Jay
Mal, go on.
Mal
(Deep breath) Mom, I want to talk to you. Again.
Malef
Ready to apologize?
Mal
Actually yes. Im sorry youre in here, and Im sorry I never tried to learn your story
before. But I want to learn it now.
Malef
(fake-surprised) Really?

Wow, Mal. Didnt think you had it in you.

Im full of surprises. Now, will you answer some of my questions?
Malef
(Over-dramatic) Oh, I suppose. Go on.

Why did you curse Sleeping Beauty? And the kingdom, for that matter?
Malef
(Obviously lying) Well, you see, it was an accident, really. I never had very many friends
and I always wanted to be invited to parties. But I was always just misunderstood by
everyone. So really I had no choice but to do it, you see?
(Kids, villains, give each other looks. Is this really her trying to lie??)
Mal
Uh okay. So what about trying to break out and take over? And why have you
stayed evil instead of trying to be good?
Malef
Well you see I just wanted to make a better life for us off that wretched island.
