Dental Casting Procedures Explained

This document discusses casting procedures for dental restorations. It defines casting as forming an object in a mold. The objectives of casting are to heat the alloy quickly to molten form, prevent oxidation during heating, and produce sharp details by forcing molten metal into the mold under pressure. The steps outlined include tooth preparation, impressions, die fabrication from wax patterns, attachment of a sprue former, investment, burnout, casting, and finishing. Common defects like shrinkage, porosity, and surface irregularities are described along with their causes and how to prevent them.

SPRUE

SPRUE.
The sprue former provides a channel for the molten
metal to flow into the mold space in an invested
casting ring after the wax pattern has been
eliminated.
