u01d1 File Path References
Discuss the following path reference. What does it mean? Be sure to differentiate between what you know and what
you might just speculate.
C:\psy\james\data\tests\data_012308.dat
What are the similarities and differences between the path above and the series of statements below?
"Click on Local Disk C:. Next, click on psy. Next, click on james. Then click on data and then tests. Now get the file
named data_012308.dat which is inside the folder."
Offer an example of a situation in which each would be used.
Response Guidelines
Respond to at least two other learners by expanding on the example they offer in their post. As much as possible,
relate their answers and your own to situations that researchers and data analysts might encounter.
The hierarchical file path structure begins with C:\ as the fixed hard drive, psy is the root
directory, james is a subdirectory, inside the subdirectory james is another subdirectory
named data, inside data is another subdirectory named tests and inside tests is a data file
named data_012308.dat. The .dat extension is a generic data file extension that denotes coding
in ASCII text format and Windows typically uses the extension to correlate with an appropriate
application (Capella University, n.d.). However, there remains an element of speculation as to
whether the file extension is indeed correct or whether it is a misrepresentation of the data file
format. It is possible to change the file extension without altering its contents.
The main similarity between the file path (C:\psy\james\data\tests\data_012308.dat) and the
series of statements (Click on Local Disk C:. Next, click on psy. Next, click on james. Then click
on data and then tests. Now get the file named data_012308.dat) is they both lead the user to the
same data file location. However, it is important to note that the entire path
C:\psy\james\data\tests\data_012308.dat can also be referenced as a file name when attempting
to locate the data file.
Therefore if one knows the file path in advance, the user can save time by keying it in and
referencing the data file without manually following the path sequence of subdirectories. If file
path is not known, one can find the same data file by simply clicking through the subdirectories
until the data file is found as in the series of statements above. When using SPSS, accurately
knowing the file path, extension and its corresponding application is critical to: 1) differentiating
between files with the same name and, 2) avoiding substantive data errors or computer
malfunctioning (Capella University, n.d.).
