Sociology 1
CLASS REFLECTION

I am truly amazed at all the material we covered, and how much I learned from this
class. I had taken an eight-week class before and many of the things went over my head,
before I knew it the class was over and I felt inadequate in my learning. Not the case with
this class, maybe its because the application for this class is in a way more tangible to me
than the other course. Either way, I am very happy to have taken Sociology, I walk out of
this class with a better understanding of self, on how I see myself and how people see
me. It was in this class that, I learned to categorize problems into public and private
(before this I just assumed only private problems were family related) I also
unconsciously have started categorizing situations and scenarios into the paradigms, I
have to admit I tend to favor the Conflict & Interactionism more but I see the
applications for the Functional view as well. Sociology taught me I a new definition for
the word Agency. I was also able to see a bigger spectrum of social inequalities; I
also got a deeper look into culture and learned to redefine it. Furthermore, I learned that
many concepts could take different definitions in the different societies. Personally,
having to put in application the concepts throughout my homework was key in helping me
in understanding it all. As for the goals I set at the beginning of the course, overall I
think I have been able to meet them. I have also in the process of this class acquired new
skills; one of the major skills I gained through this class was the ability to gather and

select information on short notice; I usually hesitate when I choose a topic for any
writing assignment, I use to change topic, start again. But with the short time frame I had
to become more decisive in my choices and this class motivated me to do so. I also think
my English writing has improved just because of the consistency in which I have been
writting. There were days where I thought I was not going to be able to make it through
just because of other situations taking place in my life at the same time. Now at my last
week in the class, I feel very accomplished and gratified that I can take all the concepts
& skills that I learned with me, Sociology has given me a better understanding of life and
I know that having included this in my academics will improve my career life in general.
