6.0
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ANALYZER
6.1
Where specified, analyzers and sample systems shall be located in an enclosed fully
ventilated and air conditioned analyzer house which may be furnished by Vendor. API
RP550. "Manual on Installation of Refinery Instruments and Control Systems," Part II,
"Process Stream Analyzers" shall be used as the general guideline for the application
and installation of process stream analyzers.
6.2
Sample Conditioning
6.2.1
The analyzer process input shall be a clean, single phase sample which is
continuously representative of the process stream. A representative
sample is one that has been correctly taken form the process stream and
conditioned to a single phase without altering the composition to be
measured.
6.2.2
The sample conditioning system shall produce the desired results with the
least possible amount of attention or maintenance. Sample conditioning
may involve pressure reduction, pumping, separation of entrained liquids,
flow regulation, mixing of carriers or dilutants, dehydration, disposal of used
and excess sample, heating or cooling.
6.2.3
Sample shall be drawn from a point in the process where stream
conditions are such that minimal sample conditioning is required, and a
homogenous representative sample is guaranteed.
6.2.4
Sample transport time, from entry to sample conditioning system, shall be
as short as practicable (generally less than 30 seconds). Vendor's
proposal shall include an estimated transport time and method of
determination.
6.2.5
For a toxic of flammable sample, reference, or carrier supply to an analyzer
house, a restrictor or automatic cut-off shall be installed before the material
enters the analyzer house. The restrictor capacity shall be less than two
times normal flow rate. The cut-off shall function on sudden increase of
flow rate such as would be caused by a line break.
6.2.6
All components in contact with the sample shall be stainless steel, unless
other special material are required by the process fluid.
6.2.7
A valved connection for taking laboratory samples shall be furnished at the
exit of the sample conditioning system. A second separate process
connection shall be provided for laboratory samples.
6.2.8
All modules and components shall be mounted so they may be removed
and services without disturbing the remainder of the system.
6.2.9
Whenever practical, samples shall be returned to the process. If this is not
practical, then a sample disposal system shall be furnished for each
analyzer.

Rev. 4, 11/02
6.2.10
Where required, Vendor shall provide a complete sample conditioning
system for the analyzer with additional elements as needed for sample
conditioning immediately downstream of the source line root valve. (As an
example, pressure reduction and prevention of freeze up on high pressure
reduction on natural gas process lines). Vendors standard sampling
system arrangement will generally be acceptable, however, for open type
systems vendor should investigate the possibility of closing either the
sampling system or the total field analyzer package in a weatherproof
NEMA Type 4X sheet metal cabinet of the type manufactured by Hoffman
Engineering Co. or Company approved equal. Where the sample
conditioning system is installed in a sheet metal cabinet the lines and
components shall be arranged for ease of maintenance and adjustment.
No special tools shall be required for making any adjustment or in operating
any valves. All gauges shall face out for ease of reading.
6.2.11
The sample conditioning system shall be installed with the analyzer either
on a free standing rack or open back panel, or installed in a free standing or
rack supported Hoffman or Company approved equal type sheet metal of
fiberglass enclosure. The support system shall have feet or clips with a
minimum of 4 bolt holes for securing the complete analyzer assembly to
the concrete floor of the analyzer house.
6.2.12
Where analyzers are to be installed in cabinets furnished by manufacturers
of packaged systems, the panel mounted equipment will be installed in the
cabinets. Where sample conditioning equipment is required for these
applications, the sample conditioning equipment shall be installed in a
Hoffman type sheet metal enclosure, and either installed in the cabinet, if
space is available or outside the cabinet. The enclosure can be either free
standing or wall mounted depending on the size of the cabinet.
6.2.13
The sample conditioning system shall be designed to provide a compatible
and representative sample to the analyzer at a pressure, temperature and
flow rate suitable for the analyzer. For liquid systems, drain and vent
connections shall be provided to empty the lines and components of
process fluids prior to maintenance work being done.
6.2.14
All sample conditioning devices (e.g. filters, dryers, strainers, coalescers,
pressure, regulating valves, pressure gauges, sample coolers,
thermometers, etc.) shall be suitable for the process conditions. Generally,
where components cannot be obtained in 316 S.S., wetted metal parts in
contact with the process fluid shall be 316 S.S. or 304 S.S. as a minimum.
6.2.15
Where feasible, a sweepstream configuration shall be provided for the
sample conditioning system with block valves for source and return line
shutoff and a throttle valve and flow meter for sweepstream flow rate
control. Where hazardous and toxic materials are involved, an armored
type flow meter shall be used in the sweepstream piping. Pressure gauges
shall be included for both source and return line pressure indication. A flow
meter with needle valve shall also be included ion the analyzer by-pass
stream and in the sample line to the analyzer. Additional pressure gauges
shall be provided for setting any pressure reducing valve or regulator

installed in the sample system piping. Where it is possible, sample system
by-pass and analyzer effluent shall be directed back into the sweepstream
for return to the process line except that non-hazardous and non-polluting
material may be vented or drained.
6.2.16
Sample system block valves shall be either ball or gate valves rated for the
service. Ball valves with plastic seats in hydrocarbon services must be of
fire-resistant design. Where gate valves are required they shall have bolted
or welded bonnet designs are approved by Company. All valve packing in
hydrocarbon service shall be asbestos, John Crane Type 187-1 or equal,
unless otherwise approved by Company.
6.2.17
Where there is no conflict with manufacturers requirements, tube fittings
shall be Swagelock.
6.2.18
Where heating of the sample system is required to maintain the integrity of
the sample, by maintaining the sample temperature above the dew point, or
to prevent stratification or possible line plugging when viscous samples are
handled, the sample system cabinet shall be insulated and heated either
with a steam coil, or a finned electric heater, and stream tracing of the
source line is not required.
6.2.19
Where stream traces lines are run, the sample system design shall
accommodate the following installation concept. Fir field hookup, the
steam traced source and return lines are to extend through the wall of the
sheet metal cabinet together with the tracer. Generally, Samual Moore
"Dekoron" or equal steam trace bundles will be used for steam traced lines.
The sample in-and-out connections will be made inside the cabinet not
through bulkhead fittings. One tracer will be connected to the steam coil
inlet. Additional tracers and the steam coil outlet will be connected to
individual bulkhead fittings for field connection to individual stream traps.
6.2.20
The steam coil or electric heater shall be sized to maintain the inside
cabinet temperature above the minimum permissible sample temperature
for a minimum ambient temperature of 21oC. The probable maximum
temperature inside the cabinet should also be determined for a maximum
ambient temperature of 38oC. Investigation should be made to determine
that the probable maximum temperature will not cause degradation of the
sample as by polymerization or decomposition or is above the maximum
permissible for injection into the analyzer. If the maximum expected
temperature inside the cabinet is above the maximum permissible, control
or the temperature inside the cabinet will be required.
6.2.21
For applications requiring heating of the sample system cabinet, Vendor
shall state whether or not temperature control is required, and if required,
Vendor shall indicate how temperature control is to be accomplished.
6.2.22
A dial thermometer installed in the door of the cabinet shall be provided for
each application requiring heating of the sample system enclosure.

6.2.23
For viscous samples, flushing connections shall be provided immediately
on the sample system side of the sweepstream block valves, unless
otherwise specified. The connections shall consist of a pipe tee fitting to
which is attached a flushing block valve.
6.2.24
Where process and/or hazardous liquids cannot be directed back into
either the source line or an alternate line, the analyzer effluent shall be
collected in a sample recovery system of the type manufactured by
Technical Oil Tool Corp. of Glendale, California, or equal, for return to
process.
6.2.25
The above requirements apply only to samples that have a vapor pressure
significantly less than atmospheric pressure.
6.2.26
Where process and/or hazardous gases and vapors cannot be directed
back into either the source line or an alternate line (as for applications
which require that the sample be discharged at atmospheric pressure), the
analyzer discharge shall be collected in an accumulator which is
maintained at atmospheric pressure and directed to a gas disposal system
for transport either to a closed collection system or to a flare header.
6.2.27
Material requirements for utility services: i.e. water, instrument air, nitrogen,
and steam or condensate shall normally be to manufacturer's standard
except where sea water is specified on the instrument data sheet for use
as cooling water, in which case monel shall be used for all parts, pipe,
fittings and tubing in contact with the sea water.
Where use of treated well water is specified, Vendor shall, as a minimum,
provide galvanized carbon steel pipe of 316 S.S. tubing rated for the
service. For steam and condensate the minimum shall be galvanized
carbon steel pipe or tubing. For instrument air, 316 S.S. tubing shall be the
minimum.
6.2.28
6.3
All pressure gauges shall be equipped with isolating valves, and where
toxic materials or samples having viscosities of 1000 cp or more at 16oC
are handled, a chemical gauge protector shall also be installed.

the supply of samples, the analyzers system Vendor shall propose an
alternate field calibration procedure for approval by Company.
Examples of samples having a composition which deterioration with the
time are:
-
6.4
Hydrogen in gas mixtures.
Hydrogen sulfide in gas mixtures.
Moisture in gas mixtures.
Samples with components present in amounts less than 20 PPM.
6.3.5
Calibration curves for each analyzer shall be furnished by Vendor. When
variation in background composition is specified, and this variation will
influence the reading, calibrations for the extremes of the background shall
be supplied.
6.3.6
The analyzer system shall be provided with permanent fittings and facilities
to test, calibrate and maintain the analyzer system. The installation shall
include permanent connections for injecting standard samples at the

SHOP TESTING AND INSPECTION
10.1
The analyzer manufacturer shall demonstrate satisfactory performance of the
analyzer system by appropriate testing to the satisfaction of Company. The test
procedure shall be made available to Company for review and approval.
10.2
Testing will generally include a demonstration of the calibration procedure and a 100
hour continuous simulated test run of the analyzer system. The 100 hour simulated
test run need not include a continuously flowing representative sample stream to the
analyzer if this method is not feasible as with a conductivity or pH probe, or full flow of
calibration gas to a chromatograph or the use of span and zero gases. Where a
continuously flowing sample is not feasible, an alternate approach shall be used, as
where a probe is immersed in a non-flowing fluid, or when only the flow rate required
through the detector is used in operating a chromatograph. Whatever method is
devised and approved for testing, the main consideration is that power be applied to
the analyzer with the analyzer in the operating mode for a period of 100 hours.
Reproducibility shall be demonstrated continuously for a period of 8 hours minimum
using a standard sample. Samples used for calibration and testing shall be furnished
by the analyzer Vendor. Test gas shall simulate the composition of actual plant
samples.
10.3
Where deficiencies are found in the design, construction and/or performance of the
