Calcinated Bauxite for Skid Resistance

This document is a research paper about using calcinated bauxite in bituminous pavements and its effects on skid resistance. It was authored by Shubham S. Neware, Pranay S. Waghmare, Gaurav D. Pawar, and Kunal J. Jadhav from the Department of Civil Engineering at College of Engineering in Pune, India. The abstract discusses that bauxite is an aluminum ore and byproduct generated in its processing. It aims to use calcinated bauxite residue for surface treatment to improve low skid resistance which causes many road accidents in India. The study will directly use calcinated bauxite as an aggregate in surface treatment without mixing with

Abstract: India is the 5th largest producer of bauxite in the world after Australia, China, Brazil
and New Zealand. Indian states of Orissa, Gujarat and Jharkhand produce more than 10,000 tons of
bauxite every year. Bauxite is an aluminum ore which is mainly used to derive Aluminum generating a
by-product. According to an article published by NDTV India over 137000 people were killed in road
accidents. In 2013 alone that is more than a number of people killed in all wars put together, one of the
many causes of accidents are insufficient skid resistance offered by the road. The project is aimed at using
bauxite residue i.e. calcinated bauxite for surface treatment. Skid resistance is the force developed when a
tyre is prevented from rotating along the pavement surface. Skid resistance can be significantly improved
by providing surface treatment to the wearing course, present study aims at using calcinated bauxite for
surface treatment without mixing it with any resins or bitumen but directly as fine graded aggregate of
particle size less than 2.36 mm and coarser than 600 micron.

Keywords: Skid resistance, surface treatment, calcinated bauxite.
