Fortherest,beforeexplainingthestepstodoit,IwanttobeclearthatIhavetriedmanywaysof
installingUbuntuwithversionsolderthan15.04(Oranyotherdistroforthatmatter)fromwithin

youhaveapreinstalledWindows8system,youwillprobablyneverbeabletoinstallUbuntuor
anyotherOSinthenormal(LiveCD/LiveUSB)orWubiway.ThisisbecauseWindows8
introducedseveralnewfeatures,ofwhich2are:
UEFIwhichsubstituteswhatwehaveknownastheBIOS(analternativeto)
SecureBootwhichpreventsanythingbuttheinstalledoperatingsystem,inthiscase
Windows8frombooting.ThisisnolongerthecaseforUbuntusince12.04.2
OnafurthernoteIwanttomentionsomethingaboutSecureBoottakenfromtheUEFIWiki
SecureBoot
"SecureBoot"isanewUEFIfeaturethatappearedin2012,withWindows8preinstalled
computers.Ubuntusupportsthisfeaturestartingwith12.1064bit(seethisarticle)and12.04.264
bit,butasPCsimplementingsupportforithaveonlybecomewidespreadattheendof2012itis
notyetwidelytested,soit'spossiblethatyoumayencounterproblemsbootingUbuntuunder
SecureBoot.
IMPORTANT:Ifyoudofindabug,pleasefileabugreportagainsttheshimpackageinUbuntu,
preferablyusingthecommand:
ubuntubugshim
onceyou'[Link]:
ItisnotrequiredtodisableSecureBootinthefirmwaretoinstallUbuntuonaWindows8

therecommendedMicrosoftThirdPartyMarketplacekeysinfirmwarewillbeabletoboot

IalsowanttonotifythatIspendthisweektesting15.04andhadanexcellentoutcome.Of12
Laptops(4Toshibas,3HP&5Lenovo)whereWindows8.1waspreinstalled,onallcases,
UbuntudetectedtheWindowsBootManagercorrectly,gavetheoptiontoinstallalongside
Windows8.1(ItactuallysaidInstallalongsideWindowsBootManager)andsolvedanyissues

Thisdoesnotmeanthatinyourcasesitwillworkperfectly,itjustmeansthatonmycases,Ihad
a100%[Link],with15.04(Onallcasesitwas64bit).
Sowithallofthissaid,installingUbuntuviaWUBIisnotdoable(notrecommendedatleastfrom
me),thingsliketryingtobootforexamplewiththeWindows8bootloaderarenotpossibleright
nowunlesssomethingchangesinthefuture(Therearealsosomebugsrelatedtothisin
launchpad,liketheonementionedbybcbc ).Apartfromthis,WUBIdoesnotworkfromwithin
Windows8ifyouhaveUEFIwithaGPTPartition(NotMSDOStypepartition).PleasreadDoes
UEFIsupportmeanWubiwillnowworkonlaptopsshippedwithWindows8?formore
information.
Notonlythat,buttryingtoinstall32bitUbuntuisimpossible.Youneedthe64bitversionfor

YoursystemcamewithWindows8preinstalled(Andyoudonotwanttodeleteit)

THISISANIMPORTANTPART
ThesystemwillrebootandyouwillbeallowedtogototheBIOS(Ifnotpresstheappropriate
key,somecommonare DEL , F2 or F10 ).

disableSecureBoot(Remembertoreportthisasabugusing ubuntubugshim ),tobeabletostill

onlyoptionyouactuallyneedtochangeandalsowillbetheonlyoptionyouseerelatedtoUEFI
becausetheywillnotofferthepossibilitytodisableUEFI.
DUALBOOTISSUES

exampleandyouinstallUbuntuonLegacyMode,youwillonlybeabletoboottoUbuntuona

Sobeforeproceeding,makesurethatyouareinstallingUbuntuwiththesamebootoptionsas

Continuingwiththeguide,inothermotherboardsthatdoofferthepossibilitytodisableUEFI
whichwouldcompletelyeliminateUEFIandSecureBootonitandbootinthenormalBIOSlike
way,ifyoufindthisisthewayyouwant(TohaveaUEFIfreecomputerandnotfaceanyofthe
problemsrelatedtothis)thenbyallmeansdoit.IforonehavetestedtheIntelDZ68DBanddid
[Link]
allcasesyouwillbeleftwithasystemthateitherBootWindowsinUEFIorBootsUbuntuin
Legacy.
Withthatinmind,remembertoalsoselecttheBootOrdertomakesurethatitbootseitheryour
CDROM,DVDROMorUSBDrivesoyoucanbootfromyourLiveUbuntuimageafterrebooting.
Somepointsweshouldconsiderbeforecontinuing:
1. IfWindows8wasinstalledwithUEFIenabled,itishighlyrecommendedtostayinUEFI,
althoughifyoustillwanttodisableitforspecificreasonsyoucan,GRUBwillcreatethe
bootablepartforWindows8.ButifyoudodisableUEFIandwanttoaccessWindows8
afterwards(beforeinstallingUbuntu),itwillnotworksincethebootpartforWindows8needs
UEFI(AgaintheDualBootproblem).
2. IfyouonlydisableSecureBoot,[Link]
thepartthatcreatesthemostproblembetweenWindowsandLinux,whichistheonethat
[Link],Iencourageyoutofirsttrytoinstall
UbuntuwithUEFI/Secureboot,[Link]
andinstallUbuntu,youmightnotbeabletoboottoWindows8afterwardsthroughtheGRUB
BootMenu.
Nowbeforesaving,[Link]

supportforLegacyBIOSlikesystems.

thatthemachinehasinstalledistohaveaLinuxbootloaderbydefault,andthereaddanentryfor

Sinceusuallythere'sonlyoneWindowsinstalledthemenuselectoroftheWindowsbootloader

anythingthatIdowithitcanbeaccomplishedwithoutwiththeproperbcdboot,bcdedit,etc.
commands.
1. OpenEasyBCDandgotothe"AddNewEntry"sectionandthe"Linux/BSD"tab.
2. SelectthebootloaderyouhaveforyourLinuxdistribution.IncaseofGRUB2there'san
autoselectmodewhichwillselecttheappropriatepartitionforyou,forSyslinuxforexample
youhavetocompulsoryselectthepartitionwhereitisinstalled.
3. Nametheentry,thenameyouputthereistheonethatwillappearintheWindows
bootloader.

ThesolutionwhichIchosefornowwastoinstallUbuntuinBIOSmodeandleaveWindows8in
UEFI.I'mnotsureifthisrepresentsaproblem,sinceintheUbuntucommunityitissaidthatboth
systemsneedtobeinthesameformat,butIcouldgetbothsystemsworking.
Theonlyproblem(moreanannoyance)isthateverytimeIwanttochangesystemIneedtogoto
theBIOSsetupandenableordisableUEFI.
IcouldconverttheUbuntuBIOStoUbuntuUEFIusingthis ,butduringtheinstallationofUbuntuI
