About Chandigarh
Chandigarh, also called The City Beautiful, is an Indian city that serves as the
capital of two states, Punjab and Haryana, and is a union territory of India. City of India,
and was planned by the Master Architect, Le Corbusier.
Chandigarh is located near the foothills of the Shivalik range of
the Himalayas in Northwest India.
It covers an area of approximately 114 km.
The exact cartographic co-ordinates of Chandigarh are 30.74N,
76.79E.
It has an average elevation of 321 meters (1053 ft.).

The surrounding districts are of Mohali, Patiala and Ropar in Punjab and
Panchkula and Ambala in Haryana. The boundary of the state of Himachal Pradesh are
not too far from its north.

Area: 30 acres (121,380.00 SQM).
Location: Institutional area, Sarangpur, 4 kms from Chandigarh sec 12-14.
Access:
a. By Road: The site is easily accessible by road (Madhya Marg)
b. By Railway: the nearest railway station is the Chandigarh railway station located at
about 10kms from ISBT.
c. By Air: The Chandigarh Domestic airport is at a distance of 12 kms from ISBT which
is the nearest air connectivity for the site.
Eminent site proximities:
The proposed site is at a proximity of 4 kms from PGI, sec 12 and PU sec 14, Chandigarh.
The Chandigarh Botanical Garden and Nature Park comes midway the site and
Chandigarh.
Climatic conditions:
Chandigarh has a sub-tropical continental monsoon climate characterized by a seasonal
rhythm: hot summers, slightly cold winters, unreliable rainfall and great variation in
temperature.
Temperature:
The maximum degree of average temperature is 40C and the minimum is 5C.

The temperature in summer (from Mid-May to Mid-June) may rise to a maximum of
46.5 C (rarely). Temperatures generally remain between 35 C to 40 C.
The winters (November to Mid-March) are quite cool and it can sometimes get quite
chilly in Chandigarh. Average temperatures in the winter remain at (max) 7 C to 15
C and (min) -2 C to 5 C.
Rainfall:
During monsoons (from mid-June to mid-September), Chandigarh receives moderate
to heavy rainfall and sometimes heavy to very heavy rainfall (generally during the
month of August or September).
Maximum amount of rain received by the city of Chandigarh during monsoon season is
195.5 mm in a single day.
The average annual rainfall is 1110.7 mm. The city also receives occasional winter rains
from the west.
Wind direction:
Usually, the rain bearing monsoon winds blow from south-west/ south-east. Mostly, the
city receives heavy rain from south (which is mainly a persistent rain).
Seismicity:
According to GSHAP data, Chandigarh lies in a region with high earthquake hazard and
falls under the zone IV
Topography of the site:
The site is irregular in shape, with longest side being 485m.
The site is relatively flat, with a gentle slope towards south west, rising in the center and
again sloping gently in the east direction.
According to the survey by National Soil Testing & Research Laboratories, the site has
Residual hill eroded soil which is clayey in nature.

Amaltas (Cassia fistula), Safeda (Eucalyptus citridora), Kachnar (Bauhinia Variegata),
silver oak (Grevillea Robusta) and Peepal (Ficus religiosa) are the trees flourishing on
the site.
In addition to this the site has dense bushes (mainly congress grass) growing on it.
Orientation:
The site is placed with its longer side along the East West axis.
Site surroundings:
The north and north west of the site is surrounded by land proposed for Botanical
Garden.
To the east of the site lies land for sale.
To the south of the site has been purchased by UNITECH, for the construction of APPU
GHAR (the amusement park).
