Desing Thinking, opening minds or

just selling design?


Nowadays the society in the developed
countries has evolved acoording to the
globalization and the
capitalisim. With it
the way we face the
problems as individuals or as a community has also change
from the 19-20 centuries until today
mainly because of the
realtime access to
all the information
that we have on the
internet. Full convergent analytical
methods has become
insufficient because
they can not handle
the volume of information that we
create day to day.
The develop of a
divergent-convergent
method will be useful if the companies,
researching teams, or
the individuals, implent this method in
problem solving. Design thinking method
face this challenge
and gives a solution.

Design thinking is a
process which includes the building
up of ideas, with
few, or no, limits
on breadth during a
brainstorming [Link] helps reduce
fear of failure in
the participant(s)
and encourages input
and participation
from a wide variety of sources in the
ideation phases. A
lot of designers,
sociologist and engeneers, has been

trying to develop
this method, making
it usefull not only
on the design field.
Ken friedman has developed a theorical
structure that supports this idea of
Design thinking as a
powerfull tool on the
21 century problem
solving challenges.
It was necessary to
organize the diferents ways to aproach
a solution in the
design field, to make
it useful in other
fields as marketing,
financials sciences,
socilogy, etc. What
is more the method by
it self try to conect
all the fields coming
from the divergent
method to the convergent method to
finally find the best
solution, that means
that the method use
the power of the
interdisciplinarity,
filling the gaps that
other methods lets
with out connexion.
The method could be
described in this
steps:
Understand, Observe, Define multiples
points of view, Ideate and choose solutions, Prototype and
test, Implement. It
is really important
to mention that those
steps could happen
simultaniously or
consecutively, and
also the iteration
of those steps and
between steps brings
to the solutions
more than one way of
approaching.

In my opinion they
are trying to rationalize some irrational proccess,
making more creative
some process that we
dont use to aproach by this divergent way, wich is
something good, and
could bring us more
and better solutions,
in addition this
self reflexin about
design is also good
for the development
of the design in
general, but in the
other hand, when we
create schemes for
the creative process
we are homogenizing
the products and the
kind of solutions
that we will find so
that becames into a
contratiction by it
self. For sure design
thinking will bring
variety to every
proccess we aproach
by, wich in a very
hidebound world could
contribute to improve
it, but at the end it
could end as another
tool for the consumerisim.
