Media Evaluation of Dance Magazine

Hazel Thorpe's media product is a dance/trance magazine that uses conventions of real magazines such as a colorful masthead and competitions. It represents both male and female audiences with photos of artists of both genders. As a product of a multinational conglomerate, it would appeal to a wide audience across cultures. The target audience is 16-24 year olds of both genders. Eye-catching design and images are used to attract this audience. Through making this magazine, Hazel has learned skills with Photoshop, Quark, scanning, and organizing software. She has also improved at making professional-looking independent work.

Media Evaluation
1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media products?
My media product uses conventions such as, a large colourful masthead at
the top left of my magazine, for ease of the reader.
My media product follows the conventions of real media products as it has a
strong colourful masthead, lots of sell lines, and banners with competitions
included, such as “Win Skull candy Headphones”, this helps sell my magazine
to the audience as they would like the chance to win something which is
evaluated at a high standard.

2) How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My magazine represents a dance/trance audience. My media product is
suitable for both female and male audience, as the artists included are both
female and male.
I have included photos of both male and females in my magazine, as I didn’t
want my magazine to be aimed at one gender, as I feel most dance/trance
magazines are aimed just at one gender, such as “Mix Mag”.

3) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product

and why?
My magazine would be a product of a multinational conglomerate, as my
magazine includes lots of different artists that I believe would appeal to a
mass audience, rather than a niche audience.
Some advantages of my magazine being a product of a multinational
conglomerate is that it would sell more to a mass audience, and a larger
range of cultures would be interested in my media product.

4) Who would be the audience for your media product?

My media product is aimed mainly at a younger audience ranging from 16-24,
it is also aimed at both a male and female audience.
Ang (1991) states that “Audience Hood is becoming ever more multifaceted,
fragmented and diversified repertoire of practices and experiences”.

5)  How did you attract/address your audience?

I have addressed my audience by making sure my masthead is bright and

clear to read, I have used a bright green colour for my masthead, as I think
this will stand out to my audience and catch their attention.
I have also made sure that my main cover image of “DJ DIO” is clear, but I
have ensured that he is using eye contact to my audience, as I think this will
also catch their attention, I also have ensured that DJ DIO is wearing white
and green items of clothing, as my main sell lines and masthead are green
and white.
DJ DIO is also using eye contact on the main cover image as I think this will
appeal to both a male and female audience, as he seems very masculine
which I think would appeal to a male audience, I also think that this would
appeal to a female audience as they may see him as an ideal partner.
I have also ensured that my sell lines are simple and clear to read, so the
audience are able to see what else is included in my media product.
I chose not use any props on my main cover image, I thought this would draw
away the attention from DJ DIO.

6) What have you learnt about technologies from the process of

constructing this product?
By making this media product I have learnt how to use Photoshop and Quark
effectively and confidently. I feel I am able to create new products using these
programmes, I am able to make my photos look more professional, by adding
glows etc using Photoshop and Quark.
Hp Scanning is also a really good product to use, as I am able to create a
product by hand, but still upload it to a computer to show others my creativity.
I am also able to use Windows Movie Maker, I understand how to change font
and coulors of slides etc.
I also think [Link] is a good programme to use to organise how much work
I am going to do, when I’m going to do it and how I will achieve this.
Advantages of [Link] are that I am able to keep up to date and organised
as I am able to check back daily to make sure I am doing all my work in order
etc.

7) Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have
learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
Looking back at my prelimary task I feel I have learnt how to use
programmes, such as Photoshop and Quark to edit my photos and products,
to make sure they look professional.
I also feel that I am independent enough to make a professional looking
product independently with less help from my teachers.
I also think I am able to make sure that my product looks professional, and
creative, I also feel that I am capable of taking photos such as my medium
close up on my front cover confidently,
