Himachal to focus on wildlife tourism

SHIMLA: Keeping in view foreign tourists and nature lovers, the forest department of Himachal
Pradesh has prepared an elaborate plan to focus on wildlife tourism.
The indigenous culture of mountain villages and wildlife offered a unique experience for visitors
who had remained deprived of rare scenic beauty of these places which were isolated from urban
areas for centuries.

These remote hamlets developed a highly distinctive culture, based on worship of local deities,
characteristic architecture of houses and temples, impressive foldwood carving, silver jewellery
and local handloom and handicraft which tourists are keen to see.

Himachal Pradesh was a rich repository of country's biggest bio-diversity which covered 7104
square km area spread over two national parks (1440 sq km) and 32 wildlife sanctuaries (5664 sk
km) in altitude ranging between 200 mts and 6100 mts.
The wildlife tourism is a developing concept which encompasses eco-tourism, trekking,
mountaineering, bird watching, wildlife and income generating community based tourism....

However, the protected forest areas could not be opened for tourists indiscriminately and it had
to be assured that the local community and tourists not (not) indulge in poaching, or herb
collection, which had caused considerable damage to forests and wildlife in the past.
The forest department officers feel the economic empowerment of people living in the vicinity of
protected forest areas was imperative for protection of forests and wild life and they must be
made to realise that preservation of this valuable resource could be the biggest source of
livelihood for them as it would give boost to eco-tourism.
The Himachal Pradesh government had taken some decisions to put a blanket ban on poaching
and felling of green trees in early eighties which went a long way in preserving forests and
wildlife.
A large number of birds and animal species, which had either become extinct or declared
endangered, could be saved due to efforts made by the wildlife wing and mammals like ibex,
snow leopard, Himalayan thar, goral, blue sheep, Himalayan black deer, Himalayan brown bear,
Himalayan red fox, vulnerable musk deer etc had been listed in the red data book...

The avifauna of Himachal had been reported recently and check list of birds of Great Himalayan
National Park which fell within one of globally important endemic bird areas. Identified by
biodiversity project, it had 183 bird species, including 132 passerines and 51 non-passernes
species.
This can be compared with 70 non-passerines and 150 passerines recorded throughout the hilly
regions of Himachal Pradesh above altitude of 1500 mts.

Govt mulling to provide visa on arrival to German tourists

NEW DELHI: Aiming at increasing foreign tourist arrivals, government today said a proposal to
extend Visa on Arrival (VoA) facility to visitors from Germany is being considered.
"A proposal to extend Visa on Arrival facility to the tourists from Germany is under active
consideration of the Government of the India," tourism minister K Chiranjeevi said while
inaugurating India pavilion at International Tourism Bourse (ITB) in Berlin.

He said Germany is an important market for India. "During the year 2011, over 24,000 German
tourists visited India and we are looking forward to further increasing the tourist traffic between
the two countries," he said.
Earlier on March 1, Chiranjeevi had met home minister Sushilkumar Shinde and submitted a
proposal seeking extension of VoA facilities for 16 countries including Germany.
The minister said foreign tourist arrivals to India constitute only 0.64 per cent of the World
Tourist Arrivals and foreign exchange earnings account for 1.61 per cent of the World Tourism
Receipts.
"This is a matter of concern for all of us in the ministry. Our endeavour is to increase India's
share to 1 per cent of the World Tourist Arrivals by 2016," he said.
Currently, VoA facility is available for tourists from 11 countries including Singapore, New
Zealand, Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia, Myanmar and Philippines.
VoA is useful for attracting potential tourists in key markets and at times also useful for people
who make decisions at the last moment.

There were total 16,084 foreign tourists who had availed the VoA facility in 2012 as against
12,761 in 2011.
Chiranjeevi said India has evolved as a round-the-year destination.
"Our effort is to consolidate our well-developed cultural and heritage products and develop new
niche products like rural tourism; wellness and medical tourism; adventure and wildlife tourism;
film tourism; monsoon tourism; golf, polo and sports tourism," he said.
The Tourism Minister said along with being committed to the growth of tourism, his ministry
was aware about the issues of cleanliness, hygiene and sustainability.
Tourism Ministry has launched 'Campaign Clean India' to sensitise the masses about keeping
Indian destinations clean.

Limit vehicles in Kanha to 55: Tiger conservation authority

BHOPAL: The national tiger conservation authority (NTCA) has recommended that the number
of tourist vehicles entering the Kanha National Park be restricted to 55 per day, one-fourth of its
present number. Presently about 150 vehicles enter the national park, a study by the authority
suggests.
The NTCA study comes at a time when the issue of phasing out tourism activities from the core
areas to the buffer zones in the country's national parks is being debated in the Supreme Court.
The study suggested that about 150 vehicles that ply every day carry a large number of tourists
inside the national park that impacts the wildlife and its habitat.

It assumes significance as it explains the impact of tourism in the popular wildlife tourism
destinations like Kanha tiger reserve, NTCA sources said. The study include illustrative
calculation used by the authority for computing the carrying capacity of tiger reserve in the
context of vehicular traffic.
The Kanha study, one of its kind, was carried out with reference to the disturbance created by the
tourists to the tiger habitat, the highly endangered central Indian barasingha, only found in Kanha
in the world, and the spotted deer, though found in abundance in Kanha.

Wildlife safari in Mumbai

MUMBAI: Nature lovers may soon be able to enjoy a wildlife safari in Mumbai with the
Maharashtra government proposing a world-class safari in the forests of the city's western
suburban Aarey Colony in Goregaon.
As an initiative to encourage eco tourism in the state, the government is planning to develop the
forests at goregaon into a world-class safari, forest minister Babanrao Pachpute said.

The proposal will be put forward before the cabinet, and once it is approved the proposal will be
moved to wildlife authority for the clearance, he said.
It would be operational within a year, he added. Elaborating on the project, Mr Pachpute said the
wildlife safari would be spread over 300 hectares.
The animal husbandry department has given a land of 100 hectares and Sanjay Gandhi National
Park's 200 hectares is also reserved for eco tourism.
