Welcome to the final lecture and journey through MSN 560 Research methods and
Evidence Based practice. For a final wrap up we will look at the concept of Magnet
Hospital Programs in relationship to Evidence based practice. As MSN prepared
nurses whether in academic, administrative or clinical practice settings it is
imperative that you relate your specialization to the idea of magnet status and best
practice for healthcare.
Magnet Status and Evidence Base Practice
The Magnet hospital program is based on Donabedians Structure Process Outcome
model. Developed by the American Nurses association, the model examines the
following aspects of quality:
Structure physical plant, human resources, organization of work
Process - Operations, actions, and relationships
Outcomes what is accomplished
Characteristics of Magnet hospitals
The characteristics of Magnet hospitals include:
A culture of excellence
Autonomous nursing practice
Nursing administration at the plate of the core administration of the hospital
Flat structure with nursing representation on committees
Participative management
Adequate resources for nursing staf
Competitive salaries and benefits
Funds for education, consultation, research
Quality improvement a priority emphasis on evidence based practice and
outcomes research
Emphasis on patient education
Mutual respect among healthcare personnel.

Outcomes research
Outcomes research is used to determine whether an innovation works. The
purposes of outcomes research are to improve patient care and safety and to
demonstrate the efficacy of nursing care
Examples of outcomes include:
Complication rates
Mortality
Physiologic measurements
Activities of daily living
Pain levels
Patient satisfaction

The focus of studies is on structure variables (e.g., type of governance), process
variables (e.g., nurse satisfaction), and outcome variables (e.g., patient satisfaction,
vital signs)
Outcomes research demonstrates the efect of interventions, programs, or teaching
plans on variables you want to improve. For example, does putting this
intervention/program/teaching plan in place lead to a decreased complication rate?
a decrease in mortality? a decrease in length of stay? better patient satisfaction?
