HYDRO POWER AND RENEWABLE ENERGY

3 Credits

Objective: To study the energy sources of relevance to Nepal both now and into the future with particular
reference to hydropower and PV systems.
Syllabus:
PART A: Hydropower
Kinematics and Dynamics of Fluid Flow: Definition; Fluid statistics and hydraulic head; Continuity,
Bernouli equation, and flow measurement; Linear and angular momentum equation; Similitude, pipe
function, and losses; Flow over body; Laminar and turbulent flow; Flows in the pipes and over surfaces; Flow
profiles in the pipes and open channels
Hydraulic Structure for Power Plants: Dams, concrete, earth fill, spillways and other open channels;
Closed conduits and penstocks; Surge tanks and discharge tubes for hydraulic turbines; Head losses, energy
uses and efficiency.
Turbines for Electric Power Generation: High head applications: Pelton wheel impulse units, physical
structures, flow, pressure drops, power and efficiency; Intermediate head applications: Francis mixed flow
turbines, physical structures, flow, pressure drop, power and efficiency; Low head applications: fixed blade
propeller turbines
Hydraulic Pumps: Structure and operating principles for centrifugal pumps, flow pressure characteristics
Basic Layout of the Hydropower Plants: Upstream pondage, water conduits, turbine pit installation,
downstream discharge and flow structures, turbine generator installation, pump turbine installation
PART B: Renewable energy
Introduction to Renewable energy sources: Solar radiation, thermal and photovoltaic system, wind
energy, biomass, biogas, biofuels
Other Renewable Energies: Waves, tides, and multiple bay systems; Energy converters; OTEC (Ocean
Thermal Energy Conversion); Geothermal energy
Renewable Energy Applications: Cooking, lighting, water heating and pumping, refrigeration and airconditioning; Solar-active and passive; Transportation, communication, and entertainment
