  • Introduction to VCE Music Requirements
  • 2007 Prescribed Arrangements for Music: Group Performance

No.

44 December 2006

Victorian Certificate of Education

Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning
Vocational Education and Training

VCAA Bulletin VCE, VCAL and VET

Supplement 2
2007 VCE Music: Group performance
Units 3 and 4 Prescribed list of arrangements
This list is revised and published annually. Students undertaking VCE Music: Group performance must
include two works from this list in their end-of-year performance examination program.

Study design requirements

In the VCE Music: Group performance study, students are required to perform two (2) works from a
prescribed list of arrangements published by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA)
as part of the end-of-year performance examination program. Details of this requirement are described
on pages 5861 of the Music VCE Study Design (20062009). Students must select one of the following
options:
perform two works in the styles in which they are listed; or
perform one work in the style in which it is listed and another listed work in any one of the listed
styles; or
perform two notated arrangements from the list; or
perform one notated arrangement from the list and another listed work in any one of the listed
styles.

The Prescribed list of arrangements

The Prescribed list is divided into two sections. Arrangements in Section A are listed by performer. Section
A is divided into six (6) style categories. Arrangements in Section B are listed by composer and/or arranger.
Section B is divided into seven categories. Each category in Section B contains arrangements for particular
ensemble types. Instrumentation may be changed in performance of the listed works for both Section
A and Section B. In Section A, following the title of each of the prescribed arrangements, details of CD
recordings of that arrangement are provided as a guide to groups in determining the form and style of their
performance of the arrangement.
All groups should develop their own interpretation of the two selected works within the conventions
of the selected style categories. In preparing their performance students may also use notated sources such
as transcriptions or lead sheets. It has been recognised that the notation for many contemporary works is
lacking in detail and in many cases does not accurately reflect the style of the work. Therefore, groups should
use notated sources in conjunction with a recording of the arrangement. In Section B, following the title of

VCAA 2006

[Link]

the work publication details are provided. Some notated works

are published by different publishers and should be checked
to ensure that they are the same as those listed. If a different
edition is being used, the two editions should be compared to
ensure that they are of an equal degree of difficulty. Where the
works are published both as single-title sheet music and as part
of an album, either version may be used. Where no publication
details are provided, any recognised edition is acceptable.

Revisions
This list is published annually. Teachers and students should
refer only to the list for the current year when selecting works
for performance. Please note that some works from some
categories in Section A and Section B of the 2006 list have
been deleted in the preparation of the 2007 list. In addition
some works have been added to categories in both Section A
and Section B. In Section A, the category focusing on Blues
has been retitled Blues/RhythmnBlues/Roots

Alternative works
Students who wish to select arrangements other than those listed
should submit an application to the VCAA on the official form
for individual approval. The official form can be downloaded
from <[Link]> In requesting permission to
perform an alternative arrangement, applicants will need to:
provide details of the alternative arrangement through
a recording of the work and/or sheet music or chart as
appropriate
outline grounds for the application. Suitable grounds
may include groups performing in a style not included in
either Section A or Section B, for example a balalaika trio
performing folk music.
The completed application form must be submitted to
the VCAA before the closing date in the year the student is
completing Units 3 and 4 Music: Group performance. In 2007,
the closing date for applications will be Friday 11 March
2007. Proposals for alternative works/arrangements must be
made annually. Acceptance of any particular arrangement in
one year does not ensure automatic acceptance of the same
arrangement in future years.
Note: All groups are required to perform in a range of
styles to satisfy Units 3 and 4 Outcome 1 requirements and
the end-of-year performance examination criteria.
