Royal Enfield, owned by Indias bus & commercial
vehicles maker Eicher Motors, is the worlds oldest
continuously manufactured brand of motorcycles.
Launched in England in 1901, its production there
ended in 1970 but picked up in India where it
is currently thriving.
Royal Enfield sold just over 300,000 units in 2014 to
Harley-Davidsons 267,999.
Royal Enfield made a record $482 million in income in
2014, the company said in a statement and revealed
plans to manufacture 450,000 motorcyles this year.
The company announced that it will invest $80
million in two more factories as well as technology
centers even as demand for the mid-size Royal Enfield
Bullet brand, with its retro good looks and distinctive
engine roar, grows. Customers wishing to buy the Royal
Enfield have about a 6-month waiting period currently.
Chennai-based Royal Enfield (RE), originally a British marque from Redditch, sold a shade over 3 lakh
bikes in 2014, overtaking Harley's global sales of 2.67 lakh units
While HD's worldwide numbers grew by 3%, RE grew by 70%.
Owned by the Rs 1,758 crore Eicher Motors and run by MD & CEO Siddhartha Lal, RE now wants to build
a strong presence in Western Europe and the US while the domestic demand for its bikes remains strong.

Chennai: On 1st May, Premium two-wheeler manufacturer Royal Enfield, a unit of Eicher Motors Ltd, has
posted a 42.4 per cent increase in total sales at 33,918 units in April.
The Chennai-based company had sold 23,818 units during the same month of previous year, Royal Enfield
said in a statement.
Sales in the domestic market yielded a 42.8 per cent growth in April to 33,118 units from 23,180 units sold in
April 2014.
On the exports front, the company witnessed a 25.3 per cent jump in April 2015 at 800 units as against 638
units shipped in same month of last year.
