1. Define ton of Refrigeration


2. List out the methods of refrigeration. Explain refrigeration by throttling of gases.
3. Derive an expression for the COP of a Bell-Colemen cycle.
4. A Reversed Carnot cycle has refrigerating COP of 4. i) Determine the ratio T 1/T2 ii) If the
workdone in the cycle is 10 kW, determine the maximum refrigeration effect in TR iii) If the
cycle is used as heat pump, determine the COP and heat delivered.
5. A Bell-Coleman refrigeration cycle works between 1bar and [Link] adiabatic efficiency of
compression is 85% and expansion is 90%.Find out the COP of the system and its tonnage
when the air flow rate is 1 kg/s. The ambient temp is 270c and refrigerator temp is o0c.
6. An Air Refrigeration system operating on an open air cycle is required to produce 25 ton
refrigeration with a cooler pressure of 12bar and the refrigerator pressure is of [Link] temp of
air leaving the cooler is 250c and the air leaving the room is at [Link] the cycle with
isentropic compression and polytropic expansion with n=1.35, and with no compressor
clearance. Determine i)mass of air circulated per min ii) compressor piston displacement
required per min iii) Expander displacement required per min. iv) COP v)power required per
ton refrigeration.

10. A food storage requires a refrigeration system of 12 tons capacity at an evaporator temp of
-100c, and condenser temp of [Link] refrigerant NH3 is sub-cooled by 50c before passing
through throttle valve. The vapor leaving the evaporator coil is 0.97 dry. Find the cop and
power required.
11. A vapor compression refrigeration system using R-134a has a condensing temp of 30 0c and
evaporator temp of [Link] refrigeration capacity is 10 TR. The liquid leaving the condenser
is saturated liquid and compression is isentropic. Determine i) the refrigerant flow rate ii) The
power required to run the compressor iii) The heat rejected in the plant. iv)The COP. Take the

12. An NH3 ice plant operates between condenser temp of 35 0 C and an evaporator temp of 15 0C. It
produces 15 tons of ice per day from water at 25 0C to ice at 50C. The NH3 enters the
compressor as dry saturated and leaves the condenser as saturated liquid. Determine a)
Capacity of the refrigeration plant b) Mass flow of the refrigerant c) Discharge temp of NH 3
from the compressor. D) Power of the compressor motor if the isentropic efficiency of the
compressor is 85% and mechanical efficiency of the compressor is 90% e) COP and Relative
COP. Take latent heat of ice=335, Sp. Heat of ice=1.94 and [Link] of water=4.2 kJ/kg-K.
13. A commercial refrigerator operates with R-12 between -25 0 C and 550 C. The vapour is dry and
saturated at the compressor inlet. Assuming isentropic compression, determine the theoretical
COP of the system. The isentropic discharge temperature is 65 0 C. If the actual COP of the
system is 85% of the theoretical, calculate the power required to run the compressor to obtain a
refrigerating capacity of 1 TR. The properties of R-12 are given below. If the liquid is subcooled through 100 C after condensation, find the power required.

14. Find the theoretical COP for CO2 machine working between the temperature range of 20 0 C and
-100 C. The dryness fraction of the CO2 gas during the suction stroke is 0.65. Take properties
from the property table.
15. An Ammonia refrigerator works between -10o C and 380 C. The vapour being dry at the end of
isentropic compression. The load on the refrigerator is 2 TR. Find i0 power and ii) COP
