Technology (from Greek , techne, "art, skill, cunning of hand"; and -, -logia[1]) is

the collection of techniques, methods or processes used in the production of goods or

services or in the accomplishment of objectives, such as scientific investigation. Technology
can be the knowledge of techniques, processes, etc. or it can be embedded in machines,
computers, devices and factories, which can be operated by individuals without detailed
knowledge of the workings of such things.
The use of the term "technology" has changed significantly over the last 200 years. The
term "technology" rose to prominence in the 20th century in connection with the Second
Industrial Revolution. In 1937, the American sociologist Read Bain wrote that "technology
includes all tools, machines, utensils, weapons, instruments, housing, clothing,
communicating and transporting devices and the skills by which we produce and use them.
Ursula Franklin, in her 1989 "Real World of Technology" lecture, gave another definition of
the concept; it is "practice, the way we do things around here".
Technology can be viewed as an activity that forms or changes culture. [13] Additionally,
technology is the application of math, science, and the arts for the benefit of life as it is
known. A modern example is the rise of communication technology, which has lessened
barriers to human interaction and, as a result, has helped spawn new subcultures; the rise
of cyberculture has, at its basis, the development of theInternet and the computer.[14] Not all
technology enhances culture in a creative way; technology can also help facilitate political
oppressionand war via tools such as guns. As a cultural activity, technology predates
both science and engineering, each of which formalize some aspects of technological
endeavor.
Some critics see technology as generally having beneficial effects for the society and the
human condition. In these ideologies, technological development is morally good. Some
have described Karl Marx as a techno-optimist.
On the somewhat skeptical side are certain philosophers like Herbert Marcuse and John
Zerzan, who believe that technological societies are inherently flawed. They suggest that
the inevitable result of such a society is to become evermore technological at the cost of
freedom and psychological health.
Darin Barney has written about technology's impact on practices of citizenship and
democratic culture, suggesting that technology can be construed as (1) an object of political
debate, (2) a means or medium of discussion, and (3) a setting for democratic deliberation
and citizenship. As a setting for democratic culture, Barney suggests that technology tends
to make ethical questions, including the question of what a good life consists in, nearly
impossible, because they already give an answer to the question: a good life is one that
includes the use of more and more technology.
Nikolas Kompridis has also written about the dangers of new technology, such as genetic
engineering, nanotechnology, synthetic biology and robotics. He warns that these

technologies introduce unprecedented new challenges to human beings, including the

possibility of the permanent alteration of our biological nature. These concerns are shared
by other philosophers, scientists and public intellectuals who have written about similar
issues.
Theories of technology often attempt to predict the future of technology based on the high
technology and science of the time.

Technology has been a boon to mankind and it is a blessing in disguise. It has made the life of
humans simple and easy to live. The effects of technology have largely been positive on human
life. We have reached this modern era because of technology. The various technologies around
us have made this world modern. In this modern life technological innovations have become
integral to our lives Technological innovations are the most important aspect of human life and it
is impossible to even think of our life without them. Technology is the greatest creation of
humans and it has also enabled humans to create whatever they desire. I think that technology
is indispensable in our modern life and it is a great positive force in our lives.
The creativity in the field of technology has always resulted in remarkable innovations. We
would not have reached such heights of development without the help of technology.
Technology has influenced people in a positive sense. It has instigated people to create better
and better innovations. We can never think of our lives without the basic amenities which
technology has provided us with. Without such technology we would still be in the pre-historic
age. We should be thankful to technology for our metamorphosis from a cave man to the
modern man of present age. This modernism is the result of technology and it has made our life
better and better with time. It is best tool that the humans have ever invented for self help. The
technological inventions from a mixer grinder to the aircrafts have revolutionized the human life.
Technology has aided the humans with the power to create anything and this is a process which
is still going on with the hope of creating something new and better.
Although the positive influence of technology on our lives is credible but at the same time
various drawbacks of technology can not be neglected. This tool of technology has proved to be
a disaster in the hands of scientists who made inventions which were not in favor of mankind.
One such invention is cloning and if it is ever used on humans then it could be disastrous. With
the help of technology we should not play with nature. Certain things should remain as they are
and humans should not tamper with them. Another deadly innovation that resulted from

technology is nuclear bombs and weapons which are again against mankind. Such inventions
can destroy the very existence of man himself. What is the use of such technology which would
prove to be fatal for a human himself? That means ultimately the development in the
technological front is not making us modern instead we are creating and inventing technology
which would erase the very existence of mankind.
Therefore, technology is beneficial to mankind till the time it is not misused. The negative
aspects of technology can certainly not be overlooked but it is on us to decide how to make the
best possible use of technology.

With the rapid growth of technology, there has been a debate on how we
are using technology in our life. Many people think that we are now abusing
modern devices to support for our own life; while others reckon that using
technology brings us just good things and makes our life easier. According
to what I have observed and experienced, I believe that people, nowadays,
have been overly dependent on technology.
To begin with, it is not hard to realise the intergral role of technology in
houses. Housewives, nowadays, are no longer housewives as itself used
to mean. They do almost every task with the assistance of modern
machines. They have clothes washed by washing machine instead of doing
that by hand as before or they clean dishes just by putting them into a
dishwasher. In the past, televisions seemed like the luxurious thing but
each family now has at least one or even more than two TV sets in their

house. It is now common to catch the image of many children or some

adults spending most of their time in front of the screens containing various
attractive things.
What is more, workplaces are becoming more and more dependent upon
technology. In almost every company, there is an advancedly computerized
system which makes tasks much easier and quicker. Most of employees
have their own mobile phone or computer so that they canexchange
information or documents as soon as they want without leaving their desks.
Besides, there are many kinds of machine such as printers, photocopiers
.etc that make working as easy as walking. In addition, in term of education,
students are now also using too much modern devices for their studying.
They do calculations even the most simple using portable calculators. (you
should rewrite this sentence) They also take advantage of the Internet to do
assignments without many efforts.
On the other hand, many people think that people abuse of technology just
brings good points. It makes our world easier to live as it helps people do
all tasks effectively. However, that is not always true. Despite a wide range
of benefits from modern technology, we can not inogre bad points it brings.
Using modern devices for everything makes people lazier and more
passive in life. It causes the creativity of human beings to decrease which is
very dangerous for mankinds future. (you should reorganize this
paragraph)
In conclusion, it is clear that we depend on modern technology too much
today. People should carefully rethink about how they should use modern
machines for tasks; otherwises, one day, machines would replace the
position of human beings to control the world.

Most people today probably could not imagine their lives without modern technology. But
people who lived just a few centuries back actually did live without it. And in some ways
lived better than us, I might add. Stay tuned for my subjective thoughts.
Although there is no debating over both the usefulness and convienency of modern
technology as such, different studies show that when it comes to general happiness,
modern technology is not a factor. And while we all welcome the breakthroughs constantly
being made in medicine for example, modern technology's effect on human relations is still
questionable at best.
I think it is becoming quite obvious that the privileges provided for us by today's science and
technology are corrupting our minds in terms of pure human emotions and honest
communication. There are studies which show that the more time people spend
communicating online, the less desire they have to communicate verbally. Handwritten
letters for one have already been largely replaced with e-mails, people talk on the phone
and via MSN and other social networking sites daily, without actually seeing each other face
to face for months or even years. They might think that modern technology helps them stay
acquainted but what it might really be doing is tearing them further apart.
Different studies have shown that despite all of the modern technology that surrounds us,
we as humans are not happier than we used to be. As a matter of fact, we are actually not
even as happy as we used to be. According to studies, the happiest country in the world
appears to be Bhutan, which has very little or rather no modern technology at all. This
clearly shows that people do not need all the latest gadgets and devices to feel good about
them selves and enjoy the gift that is life. But that is just neccessity... we still want them
because we are used to those devices and losing them at this point would make life
unneccessarily complicated.
I do think that life was better in a way when technology was simpler but I also understand
that we, as humans, are always yearning for knowledge and wisdom, and are always
wanting to move forward. We are prone for progress and guess what... in the end, I wouldn't
have it any other way.
