Towards the Rising Sun:

The Amistad Revolt

During the summer of 2014, I worked as an apprentice for a photography program


founded by the Amistad Center for Art and Culture. The Amistad Center for Art and Culture is a
non profit organization whose mission is to celebrate art and culture influenced by people of
African descent through education, scholarship and social experiences. Through the program I
was educated on the Amistad Case and the great legacy it left behind. Due to the Amistad Case, I
was given the opportunity to participate in an enriching program, which is my I chose it as my
topic.
I conducted my research by using Google as a search engine. Since the Amistad Case
helped advance the development of African American, I was able to find a plethora of
information and images on it from online websites and libraries. Through online research I was
able to find a book by John Barber, which I used as a key primary source. I conducted an
interview with an archivist at the Connecticut Historical Society through which I gained
knowledge on one African involved in the Amistad Revolt. Through the interview I was also

able to gain contact of Marcus Rediker author of the Amistad Rebellion-An Atlantic Odyssey Of
Slavery and Freedom and I also acquired his book which helped my project greatly.
I choose to present my project my project in form of a website through the
encouragement of my history teacher. I wanted to present my project in a category that I have
never used before and was torn between two options. However, with encouragement from my
history teacher I chose to present my project in form of a website because it allowed me to
convey information on my project in a visual and creative way. I took time to look at previous
history day websites and play around with Weebly in order to learn how to create a good website
since I didnt have much experience creating a website. I then created an outline for my project
and how I desired for it to look.
My topic on the Amistad Revolt relates greatly to the theme of leadership and legacy. The
leadership of Joseph Cinque and the other African captives on the Amistad ship left a great
legacy all around America especially in Connecticut. The Amistad Revolt led to a very
significant and victorious case which helped solidify the abolitionist movement, advance the
development of African American culture and educated many people on slavery. Without the
leadership of Joseph Cinque, the Amistad Revolt wouldnt have taken place and the captives on
board the Amistad ship would be sold into slavery and would not be able to leave a great legacy.
