Eurocode 7: Pile Design Challenges

This document discusses challenges in designing a new cable-stayed bridge according to Eurocode 7 standards. It identifies three main challenges: 1) Numerous combinations of load factors that can be forgotten, requiring interaction between structural and geotechnical engineers. 2) A lack of guidance on partial factors for accidental loading conditions. 3) Confidence in the design of large-diameter piles, as calculation models are untested for piles over 1.5 meters and socket friction is influenced by several variables that can't be directly determined. Managing interaction between geotechnical and structural engineers early and checking calculation models are recommended to address these challenges.

Resistance - large diameter piles

Typical rock socket design:
-

generally empirical

socket friction (fs) = func{UCS}

limited to diameter 1500mm

For piles > 1500mm fs reduces with increasing diameter

Rocket analyses:
-

14

fs = func{c'i, f'i, fb, n, a, shi, Em}

Resistance - large diameter piles

Reasonable agreement at 1.0m

15

Resistance - large diameter piles

Sensitivity analyses:
-

socket friction influenced by several variables

not possible to confirm influence of diameter from published data

GI cant directly determine socket roughness

19

Outcomes
Manage geotechnical/structural interaction early on
Complete simple checks - its easy to get lost in partial factors and combinations

New partial factors ok but remember reliability

Check your calculation model
Be clear on what your pile test is testing
