Overview of the European Union
Overview of the European Union
EUROPEAN UNION
The European Union (EU) has evolved from a regional economic agreement among six
neighboring states in 1951 to today?s supranational organization of 26 countries across
the European continent
A new currency, the Euro, was launched in world money markets on 1 January 1999; it
became the unit of exchange for all of the EU states except the United Kingdom,
Sweden, and Denmark. In 2002, citizens of 12 euro-area countries began using the euro
bank notes and coins.
7 February 1992 (Maastricht Treaty signed establishing the EU); 1 November 1993
(Maastricht Treaty entered into force)
Europe Day 9 May (1950); note - a Union-wide holiday, the day that Robert Schuman
proposed the creation of an organized Europe.
27 countries:
Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France,
Germany, Greece, Hungary, Republic of Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg,
Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania*, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, UK.
Candidate countries: Croatia, Turkey; note - the EC has recommended that Macedonia
become a candidate country.
SCHENGEN
The Schengen countries have joined efforts to enhance the quality of their service to
the public. A central database, common procedures and criteria for visa issuance and
use of the same visa sticker with high-level built-in security are all assets for both our
countries and you the visitor. Moreover, the use of a common visa system has enabled
us to re-organize our office network. Today the Schengen countries are represented by
professional and skilled staff at a much wider network than before. We now have over
1,500 offices worldwide, of which nearly 100 are located in the United States.
The Schengen visa helps promote a unified Europe, and is therefore an important
symbol of the European Union.
The name ?Schengen? originates from a small town in Luxembourg. In June 1985, seven
European Union countries signed a treaty to end internal border checkpoints and
controls. More countries have joined the treaty over the past years. At present, there
are 16 Schengen countries, all in Europe.
The 16 Schengen countries are: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany,
Iceland, Italy, Greece, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, and
Sweden. All these countries except Norway and Iceland are European Union members.

Brief History : A historical city built on 7 hills. Tiberine Islands, located in the Tiber
River, was dedicated by the Romans to the God of medicine, Aesculapius. Legend has it
that a Latin Princess Rhea Silvia, daughter of King Numitor, had twins Romulus &
Remus, fathered by the war God Mars. The king at that time was afraid that the twins
might make claim to his throne so he had them put in a basket & set them adrift on the
Tiber. The twins were found by a female wolf who fed them her own milk. Soon after a
shepherd adopted them & raised them as his own. Upon growing up, the boys vowed to
build a city where they had been abandoned as babies. Each chose a hill & became
leader of a new city. Eventually quarrels broke out & Romulus killed Remus, leaving
Romulus hilltop, Palatine, the center of the new city - ROME. (753 BC). First city in

The Arc de Triomphe in Paris is richly embedded in France's cultural memory and national identity as it commemorates the victories and triumphs of the French military, commissioned by Napoleon in 1806 to celebrate the French Grand Army. Although Napoleon did not live to see it completed, the monument stands as a symbol of national pride, depicting various military and social events significant to French history. Beneath the Arc lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, with an eternal flame lit every evening to honor unidentified soldiers who died in war, further solidifying its role as a site of national remembrance and respect for those who served France. The monument's grandeur and historical significance reflect the enduring legacy of France's martial history and its central place in national identity .
Both Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini prioritized military strategies centered around rapid and effective mobilization, as seen in their investments in infrastructure like the Autobahns in Germany, which facilitated swift troop movements. Politically, both leaders established regimes that heavily emphasized nationalism and militarism while suppressing communism. Mussolini's fascist regime and Hitler's Nazi regime formed a close alliance during World War II, with Mussolini officially entering the war on the side of Nazi Germany in 1940. Their mutual emphasis on censorship and state propaganda further showcases their aligned political strategies to maintain control and support for the war effort .
St. Mark's Basilica in Venice reflects Byzantine architectural influence, evident in its onion-shaped domes that resemble those of a mosque. This style is a result of Venice's historical connections with the Byzantine Empire and its interactions with Muslim territories, such as Turkey, which once ruled Venice. Additionally, the presence of the four bronze horses on top of the basilica, originally cast in the 4th century and brought as booty from Constantinople, further reflects the historical influence and exchanges between these regions. After Napoleon took the horses during his reign, they were briefly placed at the Louvre in Paris before being returned to Venice, emphasizing the basilica's status as a repository of shared cultural heritage .
